UEW Libraries Celebrate National Chocolate Day with Student Engagement Drive
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) celebrated this year’s National Chocolate Day with a vibrant and educational event across its major library centres, using the occasion to enhance student engagement and promote increased use of its library and e-library services.
The event, dubbed “UEW Library Chocolate Day,” was simultaneously held at the Osagyefo Library, the Central Campus Library, the North Campus Library and the Braille Library. The initiative formed part of efforts by the University Library to combine recreation with academic orientation while highlighting the relevance of library services to teaching, learning and research in line with UEW’s mandate.
The Osagyefo Library, the University’s main library located on the South Campus, hosted a lively session featuring games, chocolate sharing, hot chocolate drinks and interactive education on how to navigate the e-library system. Students were taken through practical demonstrations on how to access electronic books, journals and other scholarly resources as well as guidance on the effective use of the physical library space.
At the North Campus Library, strategically located at the Faculty Block and widely patronised by students due to its accessibility, participants were introduced to the research support services available to both lecturers and students. Officials reiterated that the research space remains open to facilitate academic work, collaboration and independent study.
The Braille Library located at the North Campus which provides specialised services for students with visual impairment, ensured inclusivity in the celebration. Special games and interactive activities were organised to suit the needs and lifestyle of visually impaired students, ensuring their full participation in the programme. Organisers emphasised that the event was intentionally designed to involve all categories of students within the University community.
The Central Campus Library, located on the top floor of the Technology Block, also distributed chocolate to students who visited.
Speaking during the event, Ms. Pearl Joan Korkuvi, a member of the Chocolate Day Committee, explained that the celebration was strategically organised not only to mark National Chocolate Day but also to encourage students to register for and actively use the University’s e-library resources.
"We facilitated the registration of individuals for our e-library. Concurrently, we provided entertainment in the form of games beneath the tent and we offered them chocolate as a treat. We intend to commemorate National Chocolate Day," she remarked.
She further explained that although National Chocolate Day coincides with Valentine’s Day, which falls on 14th February, the celebration was held on Friday, 13th February to ensure maximum participation.
According to Ms. Pearl Korkuvi, the programme was deliberately organised at four centres, Osagyefo Library, Central Campus Library, North Campus Library and the Braille Library, to reach a wider student population. She noted that beyond the fun and excitement, the day was packed with lessons about how students can effectively utilise the wide range of services offered by the University Library.
The celebration reflects UEW’s commitment to creating a student-centred academic environment where access to information resources is made both engaging and inclusive. By blending recreation with academic orientation, the University Library continues to position itself as a dynamic hub for research, innovation and lifelong learning.
Through initiatives such as the Library Chocolate Day, UEW reinforces its philosophy of promoting excellence in teaching, research and community engagement while ensuring that students remain actively connected to the resources that support their academic success.
