2022 GUSA Games Champions Present Laurels to UEW Management
The champions of the 27th Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games, on Wednesday, 23rd November, 2022, presented their trophies and medals to the Management of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW). The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) hosted the games.
The contingents won the most gold, silver, and bronze medals as well as the most individual trophies in the history of the games to emerge as the undisputed overall winners of the biennial public university games. They amassed 22 gold, 22 silver, and 17 bronze medals out of the 70 gold, 70 silver, and 70 bronze medals at stake for the 12 disciplines in the competition. Out of the 24 individual trophies available for the 14 universities at the games, UEW alone won 10.
In his remarks, Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, Chairman of the Amalgamated Sports Clubs and leader of the UEW delegation, expressed his team's delight over management's tremendous support in helping to conquer 13 universities at the just-ended GUSA games, which were held from Friday, 4th November to Saturday, 19th November, 2022.
“We won nine individual trophies. UEW conquered everybody in handball, both men and women. UEW was adjudged the overall winner of the games. In the history of GUSA, this is the first time that a university has won all the goal medals in a discipline. We won all six gold medals in badminton, and that contributed to our enviable position as the overall best university at the games,” Dr. Sarpong affirmed.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, extolled the determination and exploits of the entire team for attaining such a commendable milestone for the university.
“I want to say thank you for the honours. The circumstances under which the students left here were challenging. They took it in their stride and kept working. I'm convinced that it was the desire and motivation of the students and coaches to get the job done that spurred them on.
“It is surprising that such an impoverished batch of athletes and coaches would come back with the most phenomenal trophies ever assembled in the history of the GUSA games, and we applaud you for the character, selflessness, devotion and the inspiration to fly the UEW banner against all odds,” the Vice-Chancellor praised the contingent.
UEW will host the 29th edition of the GUSA games in 2026.
