UEW MOURNS THE LOSS OF NATIONAL HEROES IN ASHANTI REGION HELICOPTER TRAGEDY

  1. The Management and the entire University Community of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), join the nation in mourning the tragic loss of eight eminent Ghanaians who perished when a Ghana Armed Forces Z9 helicopter crashed in the dense forest of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, 6th August 2025.
  2. The crash, which occurred during an official mission from Accra to Obuasi to address illegal mining concerns, resulted in the deaths of all three crew members and five high-profile passengers. It is a devastating blow to the Republic and a sobering reminder of the selfless sacrifices made daily in the service of our country.
  3. With solemn respect, we honour the memory of the following individuals:

          Government and National Figures

  • Hon. Dr. Edward Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence
  • Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed – Minister for Environment, Science and Technology
  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Deputy National Security Coordinator; Former Minister for Food and Agriculture
  • Mr. Samuel Sarpong – Vice-Chairman, National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  • Mr. Samuel Aboagye - Deputy Director-General, NADMO; Former Obuasi East NDC Parliamentary Candidate

Crew Members of the Ghana Armed Forces

  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala – Pilot
  • Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu – Co-Pilot
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah – Flight Technician
  1. This mission was in line with national efforts to protect Ghana’s environment, regulate resource use and secure the livelihoods of future generations. That these distinguished public servants lost their lives while pursuing such a noble cause makes their sacrifice even more distressing.
  2. As a national institution entrusted with educating future leaders, the University of Education, Winneba recognises and reveres the contributions of these fallen patriots. Their careers were marked by courage, commitment, and steadfast service to Ghana. In both life and death, they embodied the highest ideals of public duty.
  3. We express our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, to His Excellency the President of the Republic, to the Government and People of Ghana, and the leadership and members of the Ghana Armed Forces and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
  4. In honour of their memory, the UEW community will observe three days of mourning, during which university flags will fly at half-mast and moments of silence will be observed on all campuses.
  5. May their noble souls rest in perfect peace. And may their sacrifice inspire a renewed national commitment to unity, responsibility, and service.

Signed
Ag. Registrar
