UEW Renews Affiliation Partnerships with Six Institutions
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with six institutions to renew and strengthen existing affiliation arrangements and establish new avenues for collaboration.
The institutions are Akim State College, SHAPE Attitude, Ghana, Jayee University College, Jackson University College, University College of Management Studies and the Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management.
The agreements were signed at the UEW Council Chamber on Wednesday, 9th September, 2026, as part of efforts to consolidate relationships that support the development and delivery of tertiary education.
Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, the Vice-Chancellor of UEW, said the signing marked an important step towards cementing relationships that had existed between the University and some of the institutions for several years while creating opportunities to build new partnerships.
He acknowledged that institutional relationships come with challenges but stressed the need for partners to continuously evaluate their collaborations and identify better ways of working together.
Prof. Mitchual called for a new approach to the mentoring of affiliated institutions, particularly university colleges. He argued that the ultimate objective should be to facilitate their growth and institutional advancement.
He questioned the value of prolonged mentorship without corresponding progress. He noted that affiliated institutions should be supported to develop the capacity and independence required to advance beyond the college level.
The Vice-Chancellor further urged the institutions to embrace innovation and adapt their operations to the rapidly changing higher education environment, particularly the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI).
He noted that technological developments were already changing how teaching, assessment and other university activities were conducted, making it imperative for institutions to reconsider traditional approaches to their operations.
“The way we used to do things in the past must also change,” Prof. Mitchual stated. He emphasised the need for UEW to review how it mentors affiliated institutions to ensure that the relationship remains relevant and beneficial.
He indicated that the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) possesses considerable human resource capacity in teaching, research and administration which could be effectively leveraged to enhance the institutions it mentors.
Prof. Mitchual also stressed the importance of accountability and periodic evaluation in the affiliation relationship, indicating that the University would continue to engage the institutions to assess progress and identify areas requiring improvement.
He said the benefits of the collaboration should extend to the relevant departments and faculties of UEW as well as the affiliated institutions.
The signing formally renews some existing affiliations while providing a framework for new collaborations between UEW and the participating institutions.
