GUSA Officials Express Confidence in UEW's Readiness to Host the 2027 Games
Officials of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) have expressed confidence in the University of Education, Winneba's (UEW) preparedness to host the rescheduled 2027 GUSA Games after inspecting ongoing infrastructure works and meeting with the University's Management.
The delegation paid a courtesy call on the University Management at the Council Chamber on Tuesday, 21st July, 2026, to review preparations for the January 2027 championship before touring the University's new Sports Complex, where they received updates on construction progress and timelines.
Welcoming the delegation, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, the Vice-Chancellor, reiterated UEW's commitment to hosting a successful edition of Ghana's premier inter university sporting event. He assured the GUSA officials that the University would provide the administrative, financial and logistical support required to deliver a memorable championship.
Prof. Mitchual urged the Local Organising Committee to maintain close engagement with Management to facilitate timely decision making throughout the preparation period. He described sports as a platform for promoting discipline, friendship and institutional collaboration. He stressed that fairness, integrity and adequate preparation would guide Team UEW's participation in the Games.
Mr. Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, the President of GUSA, explained that the visit formed part of the Association's routine engagement with host institutions to monitor preparations and ensure that agreed timelines remained on course following the postponement of the Games. He recalled that although the championship was initially scheduled for January 2026, GUSA supported UEW's request for additional time to complete critical sports infrastructure rather than transferring the hosting rights to another institution.
Mr. Tanko said the inspection had provided the Association with firsthand information on the progress of work and reaffirmed GUSA's confidence in the University's capacity to host a successful championship in January 2027.
Prof. Dominic Otoo, the Vice-President of GUSA, encouraged the University to sustain the momentum on the ongoing construction works and recommended that Team UEW use the forthcoming West African University Games in Nigeria as part of its preparations for the championship.
Providing an update on the University's preparations, Prof. Victor Antwi, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the 29th GUSA Games, said significant progress had been made on the construction of the new Sports Complex, with Management maintaining close supervision through regular engagements with the contractor to ensure the project remained on schedule.
Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, expressed optimism that the facilities would be completed within the projected timeframe, positioning the University to host a successful and memorable Games.
Following the meeting, the GUSA delegation, accompanied by Arc. Grace Akweley Oppong Peprah, the Director of Works and Physical Development; Dr. Theophilus Kwesi Mensah, the Director of Sports; Prof. Victor Antwi and officials of the Sports Directorate, inspected the new Sports Complex.
The delegation expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and commended the University for its commitment to completing the project ahead of the Games. They expressed confidence that the modern facility would provide a fitting venue for the successful hosting of the 29th GUSA Games.
The visit reaffirmed the strong partnership between UEW and GUSA, highlighting their shared commitment to advancing university sports through the successful organisation of the 2027 championship.
