21st USAG Congress: EOCO Boss Entreats Student Leaders to Fight Corruption
The Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Commissioner of Police (COP) Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, has implored student leaders to rigorously give their fair share to the effort to combat corruption in the country.
COP Addo-Danquah was speaking on the theme “Eradicating Corruption: The University Students’ Role” at the opening ceremony of the University Students Association of Ghana’s (USAG) 21st Annual Congress held on Friday, 1st July, 2022, at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre, North Campus, University of Education, Winneba (UEW).
COP Tiwaa Addo-Danquah recounted various measures the country had put in place to eradicate corruption over the years.
"By enacting the Financial Administration Act, the Public Procurement Act, and the Internal Audit Agency Act of 2003, Parliament made a strong statement to the battle against corruption in 2003. These financial management regulations were passed by the nation to purge the county of unlawful wealth accumulation," she declared.
She also highlighted the pivotal role universities and various educational institutions ought to play in the formation of the teeming youth to take up leadership roles, adding that they are fundamental to minimising corruption in Ghana.
“The role of educational institutions in the fight against corruption cannot be discounted. This is because educational institutions and universities, in particular, provide the building blocks for training the teeming youth of this country who eventually take up leadership roles and eventually become future leaders,” The EOCO Boss said.
COP Tiwaa Addo-Danquah urged university students to consciously make a difference by undertaking anti-corruption seminars, symposiums, and courses that are relevant to the fight against corruption.
The guests of honour at the ceremony were the Omanhene of the Effutu Traditional Council, Neenyi Ghartey VII, and the Director-General of Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof. Mohammed Salifu, who represented the Vice-President of Ghana.
