UEW Libraries Offer Online Access to Over 40,000 Articles – Vice-Chancellor
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Prof. Mawutor Avoke, has disclosed that the University libraries are well-stocked with a variety of resources for study and reference, including books and online publications.
He affirmed that the libraries collectively hold tens of thousands of books, and periodicals as well as offer online access to over 40,000 articles, databases and catalogues from around the world.
The Vice-Chancellor made these comments at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre, North Campus yesterday, Thursday, 31st March, 2022, during the matriculation ceremony for freshmen and women admitted into the University to pursue various regular programmes for the 2021/22 academic year.
Prof. Avoke professed that the University constantly provides and upgrades facilities, support systems, services, and top-quality human resources to support the dynamic efforts of providing excellent education aimed at redirecting Ghana’s effort toward rapid economic and social development. He added that UEW endeavours to make its products fully responsive to the realities and exigencies of contemporary Ghana and the West African sub-region.
“Our educational delivery process is intrinsically tied to inclusive education. The Department of Special Education is available to provide numerous support services for students with special needs, such as sign language interpretation. We have a purpose-built ICT Laboratory at the Department of Special Education and the Braille Library at the Faculty of Social Science Education for students with special education needs,” he averred.
The Vice-Chancellor indicated that the University Counselling Centre has highly qualified and experienced counsellors who are available and ready to assist students with a variety of counselling needs, including psychological, academic and relationship counselling.
He used the platform to update the freshmen and the University community on the state of the students who survived a fatal accident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 13th March, 2022.
“All of the survivors who were treated and released have returned to campus and are receiving additional medical care at the University Hospital. In addition, all of the students are receiving group and individual counselling, as well as various forms of support, to help them cope with the trauma. The University is taking full responsibility for the medical bills of the affected students and has arranged for specialised medical services from the Trauma and Specialised Hospital, Winneba for the surviving students,” he recounted.
Prof. Avoke entreated the matriculants to put in a lot of effort, attend lectures and practical classes regularly, and complete class assignments to aid them to succeed in their academic pursuit. “I encourage you to work hard in class, act ethically, and avoid negative habits. You’re entreated to limit your outings and avoid being lazy.”
