Team University of Education, Winneba (UEW) for the 28th Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games, on Wednesday, 22nd January, 2025, presented its awards with a comprehensive report to the University Management, at the Council Chamber of UEW.

The team consisting of 270 athletes and 40 officials, placed third, securing 14 gold, 18 silver and nine (9) bronze medals across all competitions.

Despite this commendable feat, Dr. Theophilus Mensah, Director of UEW Sports, believed UEW deserved to rank higher.

Dr. Mensah remarked that UEW excelled in several events, including badminton, handball, goalball, table tennis, and beach volleyball. "We did not do so well in athletics, and the reason is that we do not have a substantive coach for athletics, coupled with the non-availability of a standard field for training," he explained.

The Sports Director appealed to the University Management to facilitate the recruitment of a substantive coach for athletics, which would enable UEW's athletes to have all-year-round training. He also emphasised the need for a standard field for training and to attract young athletes to the university. He announced that UEW had been handed the GUSA flag, indicating that the university would host the 29th edition of the Games.

On the University's preparation for hosting the GUSA Games next year, Prof. Mitchual emphasised the need to set up an organising committee as soon as possible. "We need to set up an organising committee, as early as possible. I wish that by the end of next month, all those things will be in place for them to start working," he said.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed the university's commitment to improving facilities, including the football pitch, and promised scholarships to support talented athletes. He stated, "We are ready to do whatever it takes to train our athletes effectively and help them succeed. I will provide scholarships for athletes who need support," he pledged.

Looking ahead to the 29th GUSA Games, which UEW is set to host, Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah echoed the Vice-Chancellor’s call for meticulous planning. She underscored the importance of the Directorate of Sports providing clear guidance to management on the necessary preparations. “As the Vice-Chancellor said, until you advise us, some of the things may be oblivious to us,” she stated.

UEW's participation in the GUSA games formed part of the University's efforts to promote sports development and foster a culture of excellence among its students.
