UEW Donates Assorted Drugs to Winneba Prisons Inmates
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) on Wednesday, 2nd September, 2020, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), donated assorted consumable drug products to inmates of the Ghana Prisons Service, Winneba Branch.
The products included 50 packs of Tb Artemether + Lumefantrine (20+120)mg 24s, two boxes of Tb Ibuprofen 400mg (500s), 20 packs of Tb Amoxicillin + Clavulanic Acid 625mg (14s), five boxes of Tb Ascovit C 100mg (300s), two boxes of Tb Metronidazole 200mg (500)s, five boxes of Tb Hyoscine Butyl Bromide 10mg (100s), 30 packs of Tb Albendazole 400mg (1s), five boxes of Tb Ciprofloxacin 500mg (100s), five boxes of Tb Paracetamol 500mg (1000s), ten packs of Tb Multivite, two boxes of Tb Folic Acid 5mg, 10 packs of Tb Vit. B’Co, three boxes of Tb Diclofenac 50mg (500s), three boxes of Tb Griseofulvin 500mg (250)s and five boxes of Tb Erythromycin 250mg (500)s.
The rest are two boxes of Cap Flucloxacilline 250mg (500s), two boxes of Cap Amoxicillin 250mg (500)s, two boxes of Cap Doxycycline 100mg (200)s, 48 packs of Syr Haematovit 200ml, 25 packs of Syr Viscof-D 100ml, 30 packs of Susp Gastrone plus (200ml), 20 packs of Diclolex Power Heat gel 30g, 20 packs of Triple Action Cream 30g, ten packs of ORS (25s), 30 packs of Inj Diclofenac 75mg/ml, 20 packs of Inj Artemether 80mg/ml, 70 packs of Gutt Chloramphenicol, 20 packs of Gutt Gentamycin, one gallon of Methylated Spirit (5L), two Plaster Roll 4”, one roll of Cotton Wool 500g, one Syringe & Needle 5ml (100s) and five packs of Gauze Bandage 4” (12)s.
Presenting the items on behalf of the University, the Ag. Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Andy Ofori-Birikorang emphasised that UEW would continue to support and share its resources with the inhabitants of Effutu, especially the vulnerable, as part of its CSR framework.
Prof. Ofori-Birikorang indicated that UEW had never forgotten about Winneba Prisons adding, two years ago, some students of the University embarked on an entrepreneurial skill training during which inmates were trained in screen printing. “As we speak, I have had personal contact with about three of them who are out there practicing what they learned and they contacted me when they came out of prison requesting for meager capital to start their own business.”
The Director, Health Services, UEW, Dr. (Mrs.) Beth Offei-Awuku, in brief remarks, stated that the University was very happy to serve the prisons. “I have discussed with my team and Management of the University, twice in a month we would want to come and hold some short clinics. So, if you identify any problem, you put them together. We will come, sort them out and then we see how best we can collaborate with the Prisons Service to give off our corporate social responsibility to the community.”
Commanding Officer of Winneba Prisons, ADP, Peter Afari Mintah, who received the items on behalf of the inmates, expressed the Services’ heartfelt gratitude to the University. “We are overwhelmed by your gesture. Even though we made the request, we didn’t expect that much because it has been a problem soliciting for assistance from individuals and corporate bodies. I assure you that the drugs are going to be used judiciously as you have indicated and we are going to use them for the purpose which we requested.”
ADP, Afari Mintah disclosed that his outfit is putting up an infrastructure where inmates will be trained on technical and vocational skills.
Among UEW staff present were the Dean, Faculty of Foreign Languages Education and Communication, Dr. Christiana Hammond; Senior Pharmacist, Dr. Foster Asante; Senior Assistant Registrar, Ms. Abena Serwaa Amoatemaa; and Principal Lab Technologist, Mr. Gabriel Abbam.
Other Senior Officers of the Winneba Prisons present were the Second-in-Command, Supt. Peter Dadzie; Staff Officer, DSP Alexander Otu Bekoe; and Criminal Records Officer, DSP Isaac Yeboah.
