UEW Breaks Ground for the Construction of a Modern Sports Complex

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has commenced construction of a modern Sports Complex at its North Campus in Winneba. The construction is an indication of UEW’s commitment to sports development and preparations to host the 29th Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games in January 2027.

The sod cutting ceremony, held on Tuesday, 7th July, 2026, brought together members of the University Governing Council, Management, the Directorate of Sports, the Directorate of Works and Physical Development and the project's contractor.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs. Ekua Abedi-Boafo, the Registrar, said the facility would play a pivotal role in the University's preparations for the 2027 GUSA Games while providing a modern sporting venue for the University community and the nation. She described the commencement of the project as a demonstration of UEW's commitment to developing first-class sports infrastructure that reflects its status as a leading institution in sports and education.

Dr. Theophilus Kwesi Mensah, the Director of Amalgamated Sports Clubs and Chairman of the Directorate of Amalgamated Clubs and Sports, described the project as a significant investment in the future of sports at UEW. He expressed appreciation to University Management for prioritising the project despite financial constraints and expressed confidence that it would be completed in time for the GUSA Games.

Providing an overview of the project, Arc. Grace Oppong Peprah, the Director of Works and Physical Development, disclosed that the Sports Complex would be developed in three phases. She explained that the first phase, funded through the University's Internally Generated Funds includes a modern football pitch, sprint tracks, long jump, shot put, discus and other athletics facilities and is expected to be completed within six months.

She added that subsequent phases would provide spectator stands and an enclosed sports arena with additional sporting facilities, positioning the complex among the finest in the country.

Justice Jacob Charles Amonoo Monney, Chairman of the University Governing Council, said the project reinforces UEW's rich sporting heritage and called on all stakeholders to ensure its timely completion to deliver a world class facility for students and future national sporting events.

Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, the Vice Chancellor, underscored the importance of sports in promoting healthy living, discipline and teamwork. He noted that UEW's consistent success in university sports demands facilities that match its reputation. He assured the University community that Management would closely monitor the project to ensure transparency, accountability and timely completion ahead of the 2027 GUSA Games.

Mr. Stephen Darkwah, the Chief Executive Officer of STIVO Company Limited, thanked the University for the confidence reposed in the company and pledged to deliver a high-quality facility by the end of November 2026 to allow adequate time for testing and preparations before the Games.

The Sports Complex is expected to enhance sports participation, nurture athletic talent and strengthen UEW's position as a premier destination for inter university and national sporting competitions.
