ODSA Organises Orientation for Danish Students
The Office of the Dean of Student Affairs (ODSA), in collaboration with the Centre for International Programmes (CIP), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has held a one-day Intensive Pre-academic Orientation Programme (IPOP), for six international students to help them navigate their six-week educational expedition at UEW.
The students, from the University College of Northern Denmark and the University College Copenhagen, Denmark, are at UEW in fulfilment of the terms of the student exchange cooperation between UEW and the aforementioned institutions.
They were taken through immigration issues, personal security and safety, health issues, international library support services, recreation and sports, banking and finance, managing cultural shocks, and UEW at a glance.
The Dean of ODSA, Dr. (Mrs.) Edinam Kakra Avoke, asserted in her welcome address that UEW is the first university in the West African sub-region set up to provide specialised training for teachers.
“Moving from your country to study in a country you probably have not visited before can be daunting. The essence of this orientation, therefore, is to facilitate your entry into our community. It is our responsibility to give you insights into what opportunities exist as well as the challenges you’re likely to encounter,” she said.
Dr. Edinam Avoke expressed the hope that the topics earmarked for the programme would resolve concerns that may arise during their stay. She was hopeful that this would make their experiences at UEW worthwhile.
The Dean of CIP, Prof. Charles K. Assuah, on his part, assured the students that Ghana would meet their expectations.
“We at the CIP deal with international issues and so, anytime you're faced with some challenges, your first point of call should be the CIP. I expect that you'll follow the channel of communication. We, on our part, would ensure that we act within the regulation to make your stay very fruitful,” he pledged.
The resource persons for the orientation were Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, Dr. John Kanyiri Yambah, Mrs. Christiana Ammah, Ms. Agatha Gifty Larson, Inspector Benjamin Tengey, Mr. Kizito Kofi Etsibah Ackom and Mr. Kwame Danso Opare.
Also present to support the event were Vice-Deans of ODSA, Dr. Latipher Osei and Dr. Victor Teye; Vice-Dean of CIP, Dr. Harrison Kwame Golo; Assistant Registrar at ODSA, Rev. Fr. James Andoh-Appiah as well as senior staff at ODSA and CIP.
