The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) is reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity by improving its Braille Library to cater specifically to visually impaired students.

At an orientation programme, Mrs. Efua Mansa Ayiah, head of the Braille Library at the North Campus of UEW, emphasised the institution’s dedication to ensuring students have equal access to academic resources. She highlighted the importance of the Braille Library, stating, “When you come to school, the library is the centre of your academic studies. We want to ensure that we provide resources, not only for sighted students but also for you.”

Emphasising the role of the library in academic success, she motivated the students to aim high. “We want you to feel comfortable and at home here. This is where you will get the information needed to achieve first-class honours.”

Mrs. Efua Ayiah outlined the various accessible formats available at the library, ensuring that students with different degrees of visual impairment receive tailored support. “We provide materials in Braille, soft copies, and large print, depending on your needs. You just have to let us know how you want your materials,” she explained.

She also reminded students to submit their course outlines and reading lists at the beginning of each semester to enable the library to prepare their materials in accessible formats. “If you do not bring them, we will not know what you are studying. We work based on individual needs, not collectively,” she clarified.

The session concluded with an appeal to students to make full use of the Braille Library and its resources. Mrs. Efua Ayiah reaffirmed the university’s commitment to providing an inclusive learning environment. “This library is here to support you, but you also have to take responsibility. Use the resources, study hard, and make us proud.”

With such dedicated support, visually impaired students at UEW can confidently pursue their academic dreams, knowing they have the resources and assistance needed to excel.
