The Clothing and Textiles Unit Hoists Fashion in Ghana to Another Level

The fashion show, which is a requirement for the final year students who opted for Professional Techniques in Clothing Construction as their final course, is organised annually to aid the students unearth their God-given talents and potentials as well as entertain the University community. The show also gives the final year students the platform to showcase new designs and new ways of doing things to dressmakers in the community.

The students, supported with African print by Tex Styles Ghana Limited (GTP), depicted different shades of bridal, dinner and formal apparel produced exclusively by them.

Head of the Department, Prof. Phyllis Forster, who was enthused by the high level of creativity and originality from the final year students, expressed hope that the students were going to excel in their teaching field and help inculcate the habit of wear Ghana into their pupils.

“In fact, what I have witnessed today is mindblowing; I know our students can sew, but then they have done a very professional job today. What I have seen today is comparable to any famous fashion designer’s work,” she extolled.

Lecturer of the course, Ms. Rosemary Quarcoo encouraged the students to continue working hard and endeavour to make appealing garments. She urged the students never to be afraid of making mistakes, explaining that it is through these mistakes that they will establish their own businesses and employ others to reduce the unemployment situation in Ghana.

She stated that, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Department’s way of organising the fashion show changed a bit prompting her to teach and guide students through virtual means to make their garments. She, however, disclosed that the experience had helped her outfit to discover new ways of doing things.

Professional Techniques in Clothing Construction is a course that helps students to put together all the skills acquired in Clothing and Textiles throughout their four years of study at the Department of Home Economics Education. It also equips students with the techniques for making intricate styles in the Clothing and Textiles industry making the students have the confidence to step out into the world of work.

The course exposes students to entrepreneurial and business management skills to enable them to set up their own clothing businesses. This is envisioned to alleviate poverty and reduce unemployment in the country. It also intends to educate the community on the potentials and benefits of studying Clothing and Textiles/Fashion.

Additionally, it is meant to encourage students of the Department and Senior High School students who shy away from Clothing and Textiles/Fashion to venture into it.
