SLTF Commends UEW for Its Commitment to Loan Repayment and Recovery
The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) on Wednesday, 3rd September, 2025, honoured the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) with a plaque for being a reliable stakeholder in sustaining the fund.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer of SLTF, Ms. Rosemary Aryee, Head of Repayment and Recovery, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor, management and the entire University community for their commitment to ensuring loan recovery compliance. She noted that UEW has maintained an impressive 11-year record of compliance, deducting at source and disbursing repayments to the fund in line with Section 24 of the SLTF Act.
Ms. Rosemary Aryee explained that the SLTF which took over from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) in 2005, has for the past 20 years supported thousands of students in tertiary education through loan disbursement while ensuring repayment and recovery. She emphasised that the sustainability of the fund rests on two critical pillars, disbursement of loans to students and recovery of loans from beneficiaries and applauded UEW for being an outstanding partner in this regard.
“Student loan is the easiest and softest loan one can access in the country. Borrowers enjoy flexible repayment plans with a moratorium of two years after graduation and a repayment period of up to eight years depending on the programme of study.” she said.
Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Vice-Chancellor of UEW, expressed gratitude to the SLTF for recognising the University’s efforts and for its continuous support to students. Drawing from his personal experience as a beneficiary of the loan during his student days at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, he highlighted the vital role the fund plays in easing financial burdens on students.
“The student loan fund helped me survive and complete my studies. Today, it continues to provide hope to thousands of students who would otherwise struggle to finance their education,” he said.
Prof. Mitchual praised recent government initiatives that have expanded access to loans, particularly the policy that removes financial stress from first-year students and provides special support for students with disability. He called for additional measures to cover accommodation and stipends for special needs students, stressing that neglecting their needs could impose greater burdens on society.
He also urged the SLTF to engage with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to resolve challenges that deny students access to loans when their programmes are undergoing accreditation. According to him, such bottlenecks risk undermining the government’s good intentions of making tertiary education accessible to all.
Prof. Mitchual commended the dedication of SLTF officers who have worked closely with UEW to support students, describing their commitment as exemplary. He reaffirmed the University’s resolve to maintain its strong partnership with the fund in sustaining student loan recovery and enhancing educational opportunities for the youth.
The ceremony ended with SLTF presenting a plaque to UEW in recognition of its exceptional role in ensuring loan recovery compliance and contributing to the long-term sustainability of the fund.
