M.Phil Biology Education
Description
Aim
The programme aims at upgrading the knowledge and skills of Biology Educators. This will enhance their teaching methodologies as well as enhance their biology pedagogical and research practices.
Objectives
The objectives of the Master of Philosophy programme in Biology Education are to:
- impart the requisite theoretical knowledge and practical skills to students to enable them cope with the challenges of planning, monitoring and evaluating Biology Education programmes,
- equip students with the necessary skills that will enable them to competently teach biology at the pre-tertiary and tertiary levels,
- equip students with the necessary knowledge in the psychology of teaching and learning of biology,
- improve students understanding of key concepts in curriculum policy formulation and curriculum development in Biology Education,
- enhance the research skills of students in Biology Education,
- equip students with the necessary practical knowledge in biology curriculum design, development and assessment to enable them design, develop and assess their own curriculum,
- train students to develop the skills and competencies that will enable them solve biology education problems both nationally and internationally.
Intended/Expected Outcomes
Students graduating from the Master of Philosophy in Biology Education programme are expected to demonstrate the following outcomes:
- able to cope with the challenges of planning, monitoring and evaluation of Biology Education programmes,
- teach competently at the pre-tertiary and tertiary levels,
- exhibit the understanding of the psychology of teaching Biology,
- demonstrate understanding of key concepts in curriculum policy formulation and curriculum development in Biology Education,
- able to conduct quality research in Biology Education,
- design, develop and assess their own curriculum in biology education,
- solve biology education problems both nationally and internationally.

Entry Requirement
- A good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower) in Biology Education from the University of Education, Winneba or any other recognised university.
- A good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower) in Biology plus a qualification in education from a recognised university.
- A good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower) in Biology or related area such as Botany or Zoology from a recognised university and a postgraduate diploma in education or its equivalence.
