The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has partnered with Green Shift Initiative (GSI) Africa to promote sustainable transportation and introduce electric vehicle (EV) technology to the university community.

The partnership was launched during an engagement among UEW Management, staff representatives and officials of GSI Africa at the Council Chamber on Friday, 19th June 2026. The collaboration will culminate in an electric vehicle exhibition scheduled for Thursday, 16th and Friday, 17th July 2026, aimed at creating awareness about the benefits and accessibility of electric mobility.

Welcoming the initiative, Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UEW, expressed the University’s commitment to supporting innovative programmes that advance sustainability and contribute to national development.

She described the initiative as timely, noting that the global shift towards cleaner transportation presents an opportunity for institutions and individuals to embrace environmentally responsible mobility solutions.

Prof. Esther Danso-Wiredu commended GSI Africa for choosing UEW as the launch point for the initiative and emphasised the importance of preparing communities for the transition towards electric mobility.

She, however, called for supportive national policies and incentives to make electric vehicles more affordable and accessible to a broader population. She encouraged GSI Africa to continue engaging university stakeholders and to develop sustainable financing models that would promote participation.

“This is only the beginning. Continue engaging stakeholders, continue creating awareness and continue supporting people until they fully appreciate and embrace the idea,” she advised.

Representing GSI Africa, Mr. Prince Selorm Mawudzro, the Project Lead, explained that the organisation seeks to support the transition from fossil-fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles by educating communities about the economic and environmental benefits of EV adoption.

He highlighted the lower operational and maintenance costs associated with electric vehicles. He noted that EV users can significantly reduce expenses related to fuel consumption, engine servicing and other maintenance requirements.

“There is something for everybody because electric vehicles come in different categories and price ranges. Our goal is to help the university community transition to cleaner, more efficient and cost-effective mobility systems,” Mr. Mawudzro stated.
