UEW Meets GOIL CEO to Discuss Strategic Partnership

A six-member delegation from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) on Thursday, 29th January, 2026, paid a courtesy call on the Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director of GOIL PLC, Hon. Edward Abambire Bawa, at the company’s Executive Centre in Cantonment, Accra, to explore avenues for strategic partnership.

The delegation was led by Prof. (Mrs.) Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UEW and included officials from the Office for Institutional Advancement (OIA), the University Relations Office (URO) and the Directorate of Works and Physical Development.

Welcoming the delegation, Hon. Bawa, an alumnus of UEW, expressed appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed his strong ties to the University, which he described as instrumental in shaping his leadership journey.

Hon. Bawa thanked the delegation for the congratulatory messages on his appointment as Managing Director and invited UEW to formally submit its proposal to the Board, signalling an exciting step towards future collaboration. He noted that while GOIL PLC strategically manages its financial recovery, the company will also look for feasible ways to support its partners and enhance value for its customers.

In her remarks, Prof. Esther Danso-Wiredu outlined the purpose of the visit, which was to formally congratulate him as an alumnus and to engage GOIL PLC on potential areas of collaboration that align with UEW’s development agenda. She noted that the University was keen to leverage partnerships with corporate institutions to support its mandate of training quality educators for national development.

Arc. Grace Oppong Peprah, the Director of Works and Physical Development, highlighted the increasing pressure on existing facilities due to the rising student population and programme expansion. She identified priority project areas where the University needed assistance.

Prof. Dandy George Dampson, the Director of the Office for Institutional Advancement, outlined plans to strengthen alumni relations through initiatives such as alumni fundraising activities and an alumni lecture series aimed at inspiring students and correcting misconceptions about career limitations associated with teacher education.

Prof. Dampson noted that UEW valued the diverse leadership trajectories of its alumni and expressed optimism that Hon. Bawa’s professional experience would greatly benefit students and the wider University community.

Mr. David O. Titi-Lartey, a representative of the University Relations Office, underscored UEW’s commitment to mutually beneficial partnerships. He indicated that the University was open to supporting GOIL PLC through research collaborations and knowledge-sharing initiatives, stressing that the proposed partnership was intended to be reciprocal.

Hon. Bawa completed the Science Education programme at UEW in 2003 and served as President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) during the 2002/2003 academic year. He later represented the Bongo Constituency in Parliament from 2016 to 2024. Before he was elected the MP, he was the Director of Communication for the Ministry of Energy.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to sustain dialogue, deepen alumni engagement and explore practical partnership opportunities that would contribute to UEW’s infrastructure development and national educational advancement.
