UEW’s 17-member Governing Council was inaugurated in Accra on Friday, 2nd May, 2025. The Council was sworn in by the Minister of Education, who represented His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama and conveyed his warmest wishes to the newly constituted body.

Hon. Iddrisu underscored the unique and irreplaceable role of UEW in shaping the future of Ghana’s education system, stating, “At every time, the country will require teachers and that means that at every time, the University of Education is relevant and will remain relevant.”

He expressed confidence in the leadership of Justice Amonoo-Monney, describing his legal experience as “legendary” and affirming the President’s trust in his ability to steer the university towards institutional stability and academic distinction. The Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to academic freedom, promising non-interference in university management while expecting the council to operate within the bounds of law, policy and UEW’s vision and mission.

The Minister further advocated for expanded access to tertiary education and infrastructure development, proposing the integration of the newly constructed Borteyman Stadium in Accra into UEW’s physical education infrastructure. He also urged improved coordination between UEW and the Ghana Education Service (GES) regarding graduate placement onto teaching portals, noting that such issues must be “resolved seamlessly.”

In his inaugural address, Council Chair Justice Amonoo-Monney acknowledged the trust reposed in the council by the President and the Education Ministry. Reflecting on the university’s special mandate, he stated, “All universities deal with education, but the name ‘University of Education’ denotes a special responsibility—the training of trainers.”

Justice Amonoo-Monney urged council members to work collectively towards creating an enabling atmosphere for teaching, learning and research. He stressed that the oath taken was a solemn covenant not with the Minister but with a higher moral authority. “Let us all be careful to deity and be faithful to the oath… that we are serving the soul,” he said.

He echoed the Minister’s support for expanding extracurricular and practical training opportunities, welcoming the idea of using the Borteyman Sports Complex to enhance physical education and holistic learning.

With this newly inaugurated council, UEW is poised to strengthen its foundations in academic integrity, expand its national footprint in teacher education, and reaffirm its place as a beacon of educational excellence in Ghana.
