DPSE-UEW Holds Public Lecture to Mark 10th Anniversary
The Department of Political Science Education (DPSE) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has celebrated a pivotal milestone as it marked its 10th anniversary with a powerful public lecture at the Kojo Baah Wiredu Lecture Theatre III.
The event, held under the theme "A Decade of Political Science Education in Nation-Building," underscored the indispensable role of political education in shaping the nation.
The lecture attracted a vibrant and diverse audience, including students, faculty, government officials, and members of the Effutu community, all gathered to reflect on the transformative impact of political science education.
The highlight was a keynote address delivered by Rev. Dr. Fred Degbe, a distinguished scholar and religious leader, who spoke on "Stakeholder Collaboration for a Peaceful Election in 2024."
In his address, Dr. Degbe passionately articulated the significance of political science education in cultivating civic responsibility and fostering democratic values among students. He emphasised the discipline’s essential contribution to nation-building, urging educational institutions to prioritise political education to equip future leaders with the skills and knowledge necessary to make meaningful contributions to society.
“As we celebrate a decade of political science education, we must reflect on how this discipline has deepened our understanding of governance, public policy, and citizen engagement. We must continue to empower our students to be active participants in the democratic process,” Dr. Degbe remarked, highlighting the critical role of political science in shaping informed and engaged citizens.
Remarking at the event, Prof. Victor Antwi, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UEW and chairman, lauded the DPSE for its commitment to academic excellence and community service over the past decade. “This department has been instrumental in developing well-informed citizens passionate about nation-building. Their work extends beyond academia, touching the heart of our communities by encouraging participatory governance and advocacy,” Prof. Antwi noted.
Prof. Antwi also urged students to translate their academic learning into active participation in the democratic process, reinforcing the department's mission of producing engaged citizens ready to contribute to Ghana's democratic and developmental progress.
Prof. Imurana Awaisu Braimah, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies at UEW, presented a thought-provoking paper titled "A Decade of Political Science Education in Nation-Building: How Far Have We Gone?" He highlighted the department’s significant achievements over the past decade, stressing the importance of quality education in cultivating informed citizens and future leaders.
The event also featured contributions from other notable speakers, including Hon. Alhaji Zubairu Kassim, Effutu Municipal Chief Executive; Prof. Anselm Abotsi, Dean of the Faculty of Social Science Education at UEW; and Dr. Samuel Pimpong. Their insights shed light on the evolution of political science education in Ghana, highlighting advancements such as improved curriculum development, increased student enrollment, and enhanced research output to address national issues.
In a nod to the future, the event showcased student presentations, offering a platform for learners to demonstrate their understanding of how political science influences society. This interactive dialogue between students and academic professionals further underscored the importance of mentorship and collaboration within the academic community.
The successful public lecture not only celebrated a decade of achievements but also set the stage for continued progress in political science education at UEW.
