10th FASU Games: UEW Contingents Present 3rd Place Trophy to Vice-Chancellor
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) contingent at the just ended 10th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games, held at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya, has presented the third-place trophy won at the games to the Vice-Chancellor, UEW, Prof. Mawutor Avoke.
The team emerged first in Ghana and West Africa, and third in Africa, with a total of 23 medals, including eight gold, ten silver, and five bronze medals. The University presented 19 athletes in three disciplines: track and field, tennis, and badminton, and managed to clinch medals in every discipline they partook in.
The victorious team, on Wednesday, 15th June, 2022, paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, at the Council Chamber of UEW to deliver the trophy won at the competition and to express appreciation to the Management of the University for supporting them to Kenya to achieve this enviable feat.
In welcoming the contingent back to UEW, Prof. Avoke expressed pride in the accomplishments the team had brought to the entire university community. “I have been apprised of the fantastic feat you chalked in athletics, badminton, and the overall ranking at the games. Kenyatta the host institution could not even match you. You must be immensely proud of your achievements.”
The Vice-Chancellor professed that the athletes had given a worthy account of their ambassadorial role to UEW and for which they should hold their heads very high. He praised the team handlers for their able leadership that guided the athletes to the laurels brought to the Effutu-based university.
“As a university, we are extremely proud of you and we need to celebrate you individually and collectively. I wish to congratulate you on behalf of Management and the University. Thank you for what you have done for this institution,” he said.
Prof. Avoke urged the contingent to sustain their training regime and keep up with the good work to enable them to conquer greater challenges ahead.
"Don’t let the current successes you’ve chalked up in Kenya go deep into your head. Slow down! According to legend, the greatest room in this world is the room for self-improvement. What that means is that you must continuously train, work hard, and eat well," he averred.
The leader of the UEW contingent and Chairman of the Amalgamated Sports Club, Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, expressed the team’s sincerest gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and Management of the University for their unflinching support to the team.
The rankings were done on a country basis with Egypt coming first, followed by Uganda and Ghana taking the second runners-up position.
The University presented 19 athletes consisting of 12 track and field athletes, four tennis players, and three badminton players. In all, 43 universities across the length and breadth of Africa participated in the 2022 edition of the FASU Games.
Coaches and officials present at the courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor were Prof. Jonathan Ammah, Dr. Theophilus Kwesi Mensah, Mr. Nurudeen Ahmed, Mr. Ben Kissi Yeboah, Mr. Ali Mohammed Bansie Baba, Mr. Michael Agyei Kwakye, Mrs. Salamatu Musah Haruna and Mr. Isaac Sogah.
