The Directorate of Amalgamated Sports Clubs of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has organised a farewell and awards ceremony for final-year students who will be completing their programmes of study at the end of the semester.

The 49 deserving and hardworking athletes, who have represented UEW in both internal and external competitions during their stay on campus, were honoured on Thursday, 23rd September, 2021, at the North Campus Assembly Hall, Winneba.

The awardees, consisting of 36 students from the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (HPERS), four from the Special Education Department (SPED), two from the Department of Basic Education and one each from the Departments of Graphic Design, Art Education, Economics, Geography, Gur/Gonja and Political Science were presented with certificates and plaques.

The Chairman of Amalgamated Sports Clubs, Dr. Kwame Kyere Diabour, in his welcome address, pointed out that the Directorate had been organising dinner and awards night to appreciate UEW’s gallant students, who through their talents and aptitudes, had brought glory to the University over the years.

“At such ceremonies, final-year students are presented with certificates and plaques to recognise their contributions to the development of sporting activities both internally and externally. This year, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were not able to organise dinner and for that matter, we have not been able to bring you the excitement that comes with it. But we cannot say our students should go just like that.  This is the reason why we are here this evening.

“We are here to recognise the fact that you have spent time to represent the University in GUSA and your various Halls on campus. You, in the process, brought honour to yourself, to your parents, to your family and the University. So, we are here to appreciate you and to send you off in a befitting manner,” he remarked.

Dr. Diabour entreated the awardees to still keep in touch with the Directorate even outside the four walls of UEW. “We are not breaking ties with you; we will keep in touch with you and we will also hope that you’ll keep in touch with us. Never forget the training that you have gone through at the University. You are our ambassadors. These certificates should tell that you are appreciated for your continuous hard work rendered to the University even though you are no longer students of UEW.”

He urged them to add value to themselves, be time conscious, be honest with themselves first and with all other people who come their way. “Try and live a stress-free life.”
