This unique programme leading to the PhD in Music is a research based programme that seeks to ensure democratisation of its constituent music specialities – Music education, theory and composition, ethnomusicology and performance in Western orchestral and African musical instruments. Designed for students seeking the highest degree in the field, the PhD in Music is a rigorous three-year minimum course of study culminating in a doctoral degree.

Description
The PhD in Arts and Culture is a research based programme that has been designed to take advantage of the unusual strengths of the UEW’s School of Creative Arts in Music, Visual Arts and Theatre Studies. Designed for students seeking the highest degree in the field, the PhD is a rigorous three-year (minimum) and a five-year (maximum) course of study culminating in a doctoral thesis. The research is in two options:
Option I: Doctor of Philosophy byThesis
Option II: Doctor of Philosophy by Creative Works and Thesis
- Composition and Thesis
- Studio Work and Thesis
- Theatrical Work and Thesis
Option II culminates in a two-part thesis consisting of a large scale original creative work (praxis) and a substantial essay on the work (exegesis).
The PhD is a research degree programme. Students may however audit selected courses depending on their background of entry and upon the advice of the Graduate Faculty Board and their supervisors.

Description
The Master of Philosophy in Music started as Master of Philosophy in Music Education/Composition programmes in the 2004/2005 academic year. It has continued to give in-depth training to both music teachers and musicians and also inculcate in its products the requisite knowledge and practical research skills in music education/composition. As a result of the growing interest of scholars in Ethnomusicology and performance, the Master of Philosophy, Music is an expansion of the existing Master of Philosophy, Music Education/Composition to include Ethnomusicology and performance tracks. It is an amalgamation of the two programmes and the inclusion of two new created tracks (Electives) under the Post-graduate MPhil Music programmes.

It is a build up on the General Diploma programme and it has the objective of inculcating in its products the essential knowledge and practical skills in music, and also train talented musicians in various areas of music and dance. It seeks to provide general music training and the appropriate skills in music to students and prepares them to pursue careers in the music industry as music technicians, music broadcasters, music directors and theatre directors.
