UEW Matriculates 2,611 Sandwich Students for 2019/2020 Academic Year
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) on Friday, 11th September, 2020, held a virtual matriculation ceremony for 2,611 sandwich students for the 2019/2020 academic year.
The virtual matriculation, which took place at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre, North Campus, Winneba, was as a result of restrictions imposed to mitigate the debilitating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni, in his address, reiterated that UEW as an academic community is committed to building and sustaining a global centre of excellence for teacher education. He emphasised that the University had kept its eyes on its vision which is to be an internationally reputable institution for teacher education and research.
“We have been actively and carefully pursuing our mandate through the mission of training competent professional teachers for all levels of education as well as conducting research, disseminating knowledge, and contributing to educational policy and development,” he averred.
Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni highlighted significant developments the University had initiated to provide adequate infrastructure and a more conducive learning environment, open up access, and facilitate a more robust, up to date, and effective teaching and learning.
According to him, among the initiatives being undertaken by the University were the continual development of IT infrastructure, investments to improve user experiences on the University Learning Management System (LMS) and academic work, investments to increase the stock of academic e-resources and the construction of students centre, a one-stop-shop for all student services needs.
The Vice-Chancellor entreated matriculants to view their matriculation as a journey; a journey to improve themselves to impact their own lives and those of society. “I am really excited about the high premium you have placed on the pricelessness of a University degree. Indeed, education remains the most effective means of enhancing socioeconomic mobility and I am proud to be contributing to UEW, a University renowned for providing access to the Nation’s teachers and other professionals in the innovative space.
“In this information explosion era, knowledge is likely to be obsolete within a relatively short time; and this really has been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and its greater implication for quality education. Hence, you must take advantage of technology for continuous learning and skills improvement,” he admonished matriculants.
