The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has held a matriculation ceremony for fresh students at its College for Distance Education and e-Learning (CODeL) for the 2022/2023 academic year.
The ceremony, which took place at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre on Wednesday, 5th April, 2023, is a statutory requirement to grant fresh students membership in the university once they have met the academic standards for admission and sworn the matriculation oath.

Out of 11,689 applicants who were admitted, 8,745 applicants registered for the various diploma, post-diploma, bachelor’s degree, and postgraduate programmes. A total of 576 students, representing 6.6%, registered for diploma programmes; 4,061 for post-diploma programmes, representing 46.4%; 3,253 for undergraduate programmes, representing 37.2%; and 855 students, representing 9.8%, registered for post-graduate programmes. Out of the total number of enrolled students, 5,204 representing 59.5% are males and 3,541 representing 40.5% are females.
In his address at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, disclosed CODeL’s continuous endeavours to provide top-notch education aimed at redirecting Ghana’s effort towards rapid economic and social development as well as making its products fully responsive to the realities and exigencies of contemporary Ghana and the West African sub-region.

“To provide flexible learning spaces for students in the country, the University has opened two new study centres at Dormaa Ahenkro Senior High School and Kofi Adjei Senior High School at Fawoade in Kumasi. This brings the total number of study centres to forty-four offering quality education across the country,” he affirmed.
He hinted at plans to create a study centre at the College of Languages Education at Ajumako and in the newly created regions of Ghana to deliver quality education at the doorstep of students.
Prof. Avoke revealed that Management was making the necessary arrangements to introduce the Master of Education in Basic Education, the Master of Education in Early Grade, and the MBA programmes by distance mode next academic year to support applicants with ambitions to enrol in such programmes in achieving their goals through distance learning.
He indicated that the university had taken steps to enhance the online registration of courses and access to results, adding that the records of students were being migrated onto the Online Students Information System (OSIS 2) to enable students to register for their courses and access their results at their own convenience every semester.

The Vice-Chancellor counselled the matriculants to take inspiration from their predecessors and work hard to attain laurels for both themselves and the university.
“My dear matriculants, it is crucial to draw your attention to the fact that the university is governed by rules and regulations and that there are specific actions to take when taking part in various activities. As a result, I respectfully ask that you read the policies listed on the University’s website carefully and follow them,” he advised.
The Ag. Registrar, Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah, on her part, stressed the significance of the ceremony to the fresh students.

“Matriculation marks the formal admission of fresh students to pursue various academic programmes as junior members who have fully registered in the University of Education, Winneba,” she stated.
She beseeched the matriculants to keep up their hard work and always protect the university’s reputation.
"As fresh students, we expect you to utilise the various facilities and opportunities available for the best of outcomes even as you pursue your various programmes of study at the various UEW study centres spread across the country. It is the responsibility of all of us to help promote the image of our noble institution in a positive manner and shape the destiny of our nation. Our individual and collective efforts in this regard should positively impact our nation," she said.
