The Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sports Students Association, University of Education, Winneba (UEW-HPERSSA), has hosted the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, University of Cape Coast (UCC-HPER) for socialisation and fun games.

The event was meant to strengthen the existing cooperation and bonds between the only two institutions that train Physical Education instructors in Ghana.

It took place at the North Campus of UEW on Saturday, 1st October, 2022. The two institutions had fun competing in handball, netball, volleyball, and football.

The Head of Department (HoD), UEW-HPERS, Dr. Munkaila Seibu, affirmed that the partnership started way back in his days as a student at UEW but stopped along the line. Hence, when he became the HoD, he thought it prudent to restructure that kind of collaboration to foster stronger bonds among the students and encourage mutual support.

"We decided to bring back the pleasurable activities after realising how much the students might benefit from them. Through this partnership, we will begin to consider how to work together, and how to develop projects jointly,” he asserted.

Dr. Seibu expressed hope that the one-day event would refresh students’ minds and foster a sense of teamwork, as well as improve their academic and social lives. He was delighted with the students’ excellent display of professionalism and active involvement in the games.

The HPERS HoD thanked the Management of UEW for their unending support to the Department. "We sincerely hope Management will continue to help us to show our students exactly what they must do to be successful in their careers. I am incredibly appreciative of every student's efforts to demonstrate the discipline they have been taught."

The HoD of HPER, UCC, Dr. Edward Wilson Ansah, disclosed that the collaboration between UEW and UCC is to develop enthusiasts and specialists for physical education to promote the discipline both in the country and abroad.

“In fact, we teach all the disciplines they are engaging themselves in now. So, it’s not surprising that they are playing as professionals. Our bond with the lecturers at UEW is really deep, and it extends to the students as well. We, therefore, intend to increase our sense of unity and cooperation,” he stated.

Dr. Ansah entreated the student leadership to continue to foster a good network beyond the confines of the Central Region and Ghana that would be mutually beneficial. He further urged the students to treat their academic work seriously and to devote a lot of their time, energy, and resources to learning, saying they would never regret it.

A Lecturer at UEW-HPERS and patron of HPERSSA, Dr. Ernest Yeboah Acheampong, described the occasion as impressive.

"I think it will help improve the teaching aspect as well as our students giving their best and improving them academically. We need to exchange knowledge and resources because we are the only two institutions in the country trying to develop teachers in the discipline," he said.

The President of UEW-HPERSSA, Ms. Victoria Afrifa, emphasised the need to engage in such activities to help them build on whatever they are taught in the classroom. She expressed her gratitude to the entire student body for their tremendous support in making the event a success. She beseeched students to extend the same level of support to her successor.

Ms. Victoria Afrifa urged the incoming executive to work hard and be passionate about what they do to surmount all obstacles that come their way.

The President of UCC-HPERSA, Mr. Samuel Kadeh, revealed that the activities were in fulfillment of his manifesto promise to revive the collaboration between UEW and UCC that become dormant along the way.
