Public Relations Unit

The Department helps in the strategic management of the University's relationships with key publics to establish and maintain mutual lines of communication, understanding, acceptance, and cooperation for the mutual benefit of the University and its publics. This Department uses issues management, trend analysis, research, developing and maintaining media contacts, and sound and ethical communication as fundamental tools to inform and emphasise the responsibility of Management to serve public interests.

The functions of the Unit are:

  • Monitor and scan the University's environment for potential problems and opportunities by identifying and defining issues that impact the University
  • Collaborate with the Department of Media Relations to monitor the University's social media handles to gather intelligence on issues
  • Research, engage and provide relevant feedback to publics in accordance with laid down processes
  • Forward issues alerts and briefing notes to senior manager for review and analysis
  • Advise on responses to potential issues
  • Build strong relationships and interact with publics to come into contact with issues
  • Study, identify and create a database of specific publics and thought-leaders for support
  • Submit issues briefing notes on interactions with key publics
  • Brainstorm, plan, organise and manage activities that help the University to achieve its Public Relations goals
  • Help implement and manage corporate giving strategies (i.e. philanthropic efforts and charitable giving activities
  • Communicate effectively with identifiable individuals and groups at various levels within the community to discover issues concerning them and address pressing concerns
  • Kickstart relationship and support opportunities by acting as the key contact point for individual residents, businesses, and customers in the local area
  • Implement programmes closely aligned with the corporate strategy
  • Support organisational goals by raising community awareness about available products and services
  • Develop a strong relationship with local communities, local government and media to increase reach about organisational initiatives or programme
  • Help prepare organisational materials (i.e. organisational stories, fact sheets, talking points, and social media content to enhance organisational image
  • Help identify partnership opportunities that promote the image and reputation of the University
  • Coordinate and manage volunteer efforts to support engagements
