About the Directorate of Gender Mainstreaming
Promoting equity since 2004
Built on a baseline study of gender discrimination at UEW, the Directorate has grown into a centre that shapes university-wide gender policy, training and advocacy.
History & Overview
The Gender Mainstreaming Directorate was set up in support of efforts to promote gender equity and to ensure that gender gains the needed focus in various university activities.
The Directorate initially started as a project with financial support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The project entailed a baseline study conducted in 2004/2005 to identify areas in the University where gender discrimination was paramount and to design strategies and policies to address them.
As a strategy to address the problems identified, a Gender Action Plan (GAP) was developed, and a Gender Mainstreaming Unit was established to implement it — funded by the Carnegie Corporation from 2006 to 2009. The Unit was upgraded to a full Directorate in 2009.
Today the Directorate develops interventions that help UEW address gender imbalances in its educational delivery, in line with international conventions ratified by the Government of Ghana and the Sustainable Development Goals.
