The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Basic School has organised an engaging Sports Week from Monday to Wednesday, 16th – 18th June, 2025, at the North Campus of the University.

The event, which took place under the supervision of the Sports Committee and coordination from student leaders, emphasised physical development, sportsmanship and inclusive participation among learners.

Mr. Samson Elikem Agbadra, a level 400 student from the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (HPERS) and former Student Representative Council (SRC) Sports and Games General Secretary, led the coordination of the week’s activities.

Mr. Agbadra highlighted the importance of fostering discipline, agility and teamwork in young learners through diverse sporting activities such as aerobic sessions, cone picking, colour hops and tyre-rolling races. The interactive nature of the games, he said, encouraged full participation from students of all classes including those in the special needs unit.

“Our objective was to get all pupils involved and identify the activities they are most active in. The energy and enthusiasm shown are incredible and we saw great sportsmanship and discipline throughout. These are traits that, if nurtured early, will positively shape their futures,” Mr. Agbadra noted.

Echoing this sentiment, Ms. Joyce Yesutor Adzimah, a member of the Sports Committee, emphasised the developmental benefits of the programme. “The Sports Week was designed to help learners develop both fine and gross motor skills and also assist in their cognitive growth. Through these physical activities, students build muscle strength, coordination and even improve basic academic-related abilities like pencil grip.”

Ms. Joyce Adzimah added that safety was a top priority. “The school provided adequate teacher supervision and first aid supplies and ensured inclusive participation with particular attention given to special needs learners. With the support of three attachment coaches from the HPERS department, the school has also begun identifying and nurturing talents in football, handball, athletics and swimming,” she revealed.

The committee expressed their intention to expand the sports programme and provide more opportunities for students to grow physically and mentally. “We are building something solid. It is not just about play; it is about preparing our children for the future,” Ms. Joyce Adzimah affirmed.

The UEW Basic School Sports Week stands as a testament to the university’s broader mission of promoting inclusive education, character building and student engagement beyond the classroom.
