UEW signs MOU with Mampong College of Technical Education
The University of Education, Winneba has concluded a pact with the Mampong College of Technical Education as part of the processes to aid the Colleges of Education in a smooth transition into tertiary status. “the Colleges of Education are our cherished partners in ensuring quality teacher education, training and quality education delivery in Ghana and beyond” the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mawutor Avoke said this in his welcome address to the representatives of the Mampong College of Technical Education at a ceremony held in the council chamber on Wednesday 14th September, 2016.
Speaking on the necessity for the affiliation, Professor Mawutor Avoke said it was necessary that some higher educational institutions support the various Colleges of Education in building their capacities as this was critical in the course of establishing a frame-work for professional development and growth as well as monitoring it activities.
Expatiating on a statement alluded to him in recent media publications, as having said that a certain percentage of teachers do not qualify to teach in tertiary institutions, he said that information was factually inaccurate. He explained that it was not a generalized statement to include all tertiary institutions but specifically referred to the Colleges of Education after some surveys had pointed out that the Colleges did not have adequate MPhil holders to teach in those institutions. He added that it was not intended to downplay or belittle the caliber of teachers in the Colleges of Education.
The Principal of Mampong Technical College of Education, Rev. Dr. Victor Kwami Nyuieko Avotri, in a statement said ‘the pact signed was important because as the College moved ahead, it was good to associate itself with institutions that can help further their mandate of training technical teachers’. In view of this, he was grateful that the agreement had been concluded.
The Council Chairman of Mampong Technical College of Education expressed his gratitude to the Mampong Technical College of Education for joining ties with the University of Education, Winneba and was optimistic that other Colleges will follow their steps.
