SPED Reading Resource Centre Donates to Patrons

The Special Education Reading Resource Centre under the Department of Special Education (SPED), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has donated assorted children’s clothing, story books and school supplies to support basic school pupils who use the Centre.

The clothes were sponsored by a philanthropist, Dr. Hannah Acquaye; books by Campaign for Learning Differences (CLED), Ghana; and school supplies by Mrs. Florence Akua Mensah.

The donation, which took place at the SPED Reading Resource Centre, was under the patronage of the Dean of the Faculty of Educational Studies, UEW, Prof. Sakina Acquah, with support from the Head of SPED, Dr. Yaw Nyadu Offei, the Centre Supervisor, Mrs. Florence Akua Mensah, among other lecturers from SPED.

Prof. Sakina Acquah remarked that "allowing children to read and training them to read is a very valuable gift to children because children who cannot read will not be able to make meaning of their lives in education. This is why we have a lot of adults who can't tell their left from right. Therefore, I believe that allowing children to read is an excellent thing."

She commended the children for their efforts and the schools for allowing their children to constantly visit the centre while promising to support the centre to upgrade its standards. She also extended appreciation to Miss Pearl Doku, a volunteer at the centre, for voluntarily keeping the centre running.

The SPED Resource Centre since its inception in 2006, has helped basic school learners with diverse reading needs in various forms to overcome their reading difficulties to some extent. The services rendered by the Centre include reading remediation, organisation of workshops and seminars for teachers, resource library and school mobile library, and opening of reading clinics and resource consultation, amongst others.
