Report on workshop on the use of the ‘R’ econometrics software

Econs Workshop

The Department of Economics Education in collaboration with Department of Business Education organised a workshop  from August 8-12, 2016, on the use of econometric software called "R" at the computer laboratory of the Department of Economics Education at the Faculty Block (North Campus). "R" is an open source software downloadable from the Internet, It is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. R provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, etc) and graphical techniques, and is highly extensible.

In his opening address, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Science Education, Professor Yaw Ofosu-Kusi, expressed enthusiasm about the workshop and urged the participants to make good use of the opportunity to learn and use software since it provides a wide variety of statistical packages which will build the research of Faculty.

The resource persons, Dr. Peter Aglobitse and Mr. Carl Korkpoe from the Department of Economics and Department of Computer Science respectively of the University of Cape Coast took participants through the use of the software. Topics covered included linear and nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, and graphical techniques.The workshop attracted participants from other departments such as the Department of Mathematics Education, Department of Geography Education and Students’ Record office of the University of Education. The participants were grateful to the resource person and the organisers and looked forward to more of such workshops in the future.
