Prof. Charles Owu-Ewie is a Fulbright Scholar and an American-trained educationist from the Ohio University, Athens, United States of America (USA) with vast experience in Language and Education (First and Second Language Teaching, Language materials development, Language planning and language policy of education, Bilingual education, Curriculum development).
The astute professor started his initial degree education at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), where he graduated as a first-class student with a Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.), Akan, in 1997. He proceeded to the Ohio University, Athens, USA, where he earned a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Applied Linguistics (Teaching English as a Second Language) in 2003. His academic adventures at the Ohio University, Athens, USA, further led to his obtaining Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Teacher Education (Curriculum and Instruction) in 2008.
As a multiple award winner, Prof. Charles Owu-Ewie, has won among others, Best Student Award, School of Ghana Languages, Ajumako, in 1992; Fulbright Scholarship, IIE, USA, in 2001; African Language Teaching Fellow, African Studies, Ohio University, Athens in 2006; Award for Program Technical Advisor (PTA) for Teaching and Learning Material Programme/Ghana in 2014 and Award for participation in International Seminar on Curriculum Development at Ahron Ofri International Training Center, Israel, in 2015.
Prof. Charles Owu-Ewie, has made a remarkable impact in his chosen field of education, serving as an external assessor at various times to the Department of Linguistics, University of Ghana, Legon, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Education, University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast and the Department of Modern Languages, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.
Prof. Charles Owu-Ewie has been involved in scores of very important national and international projects. The notable ones include Team Lead, Development of Ghanaian Language Curriculum for Primary Schools (KG1 - BASIC 3). Ministry of Education, Ghana, in 2019; Lead, Language and Literacy – Curriculum Development for Colleges of Education in Ghana. Transforming Teacher Education and Learning (T-TEL), Ghana, in 2018; Lead, Language and Literacy - The National Teacher Education Curriculum Framework: The Essential Elements of Initial Teacher Education, Ministry of Education/T-TEL, in 2018 and Technical Advisor – Framework for developing KG to P3 Supplementary Readers in the Ghana, CRDD/UNICEF Project, in 2016.
He has also consulted for a USAID-University of Chicago and Harvard University, Cambridge programmes. He was the Programme Technical Advisor for NALAP/TLMP, a USAID-University of Chicago Programme, Accra, in 2012. He is a Member, National Literacy Advisory Committee, Ghana Education Service/Learning USAID Project, Accra since 2016 and Principal Validator – Complementary Basic Education Literacy and Numeracy materials, Plan International, Accra, in 2017. In 2008, he served as Programme Coordinator/Preceptor, Development of Harvard African Languages Teaching and Learning Materials Series, African and African-American Studies Department, Harvard University, Cambridge.
His astute contribution to the field of education and enormous experience has earned him major roles on important National Committees and Boards. Prominent among these committees and Boards are Steering Committee Member – Teacher Education Curriculum Review Committee, T-TEL, Ghana, in 2016; Technical Committee Member - Development of National Curriculum Framework for Initial Teacher Training in Ghana, T-TEL, Accra-Ghana, in 2016, Member – P1-3 Syllabus Review Advisory Committee, National Council Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) and Curriculum Research Development Division (CRDD), Ghana-Accra, in 2016; Member – National Accreditation Board, Accra-Ghana, 2016;
Prof. Charles Owu-Ewie has facilitated numerous workshops for the Ministry of Education, Accra, USAID, Accra, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science of technology, Kumasi, Ghana, CRDD-GES, Accra, Institute for Teacher Education and Continuing Professional Development (ITECPD) of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), and several other Faculties and Departments at UEW. He also has to his credit, over 40 conference and seminar presentations.
Prof. Owu-Ewie, has published widely in highly reputable refereed journals locally and internationally. He has over 25 articles, 18 manuals and technical documents, and three books. Some of his recent books are Introduction to language teaching: A resource for language teachers in 2018, Introduction to traditional and action research (revised edition) also in 2017.
Prof. Charles Owu-Ewie is married with five (5) children.
