Prof. Kankam Chairs Governing Council of UENR

Associate Professor, George Kankam, Dean of School of Graduate Studies, University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has been appointed to lead the Governing Council of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) to pioneer change in energy, environment and technology towards Ghana’s drive at sustainable development.

Prof. George Kankam is a British Council Scholar, Fulbright Scholar and a British-trained educationist from the Universities of Hull and Sussex with extensive experience and expertise in General Education, Teacher Education and Guidance and Counselling.

Prof. George Kankam, was educated at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, where he obtained B.A (Hons) in History and Diploma in Education in 1987. He subsequently served as a Teaching Assistant and later as a Graduate Assistant at the Faculty of Education, University of Cape Coast from 1987 to 1990.

He holds a PhD. degree in Teacher Education from the University of Hull, UK .  Before then, he had obtained a Master of Philosophy Degree in Guidance and Counselling from University of Cape Coast, Ghana, and a Master of Arts Degree in Teacher Education from University of Sussex, U.K. He taught as a Tutor at Mfantsipim School, Cape Coast from 1989 to 1993.

Prof. Kankam’s immense scholarship has won him several positions and led him to serve on numerous committees at the University of Education, Winneba.  He was the Head of Department, Psychology and Education from September 1998 to August 2001; the Deputy Director, Institute for Distance and e-Learning (then Institute for Educational Development and Extension) from September 2007 – 2008; Director, Counselling Centre from September, 2008 – August 2010; Director, Centre for Educational Policy Studies from September 2010 – August 2014; Dean, Faculty of Educational Studies from September 2014 – August 2015; Acting Principal, College of Languages Education from September 2015 – September 2016.

Prof. Kankam was a Member of the Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba as a Convocation Representative from September 2012 to September 2016.

Prof. Kankam has been extensively involved in designing and organising In-Service Education and Training programmes (INSET) for Basic School Teachers, Tutors of Senior High Schools and Tutors of Colleges of Education in Ghana.  He has also been involved in organising training workshop for Lecturers of the University of Ghana, Legon, the Ghana Medical School as well as members of the West African Health Organization (WAHO). Prof. Kankam designed the IN-IN-Out Teacher Education Programme for the Colleges of Education in Ghana.

His industry, meticulous work, and worth of experience in the educational field earned him a place as a Board Member of the National Teaching Council and the Ghana Government Nominee on the West African Examinations Council.

Prof. Kankam has consulted for several local and international educational projects. He was appointed as a Consultant for the development of the National Teachers’ Standards for Pre-service and In-service Teachers at the Pre-Tertiary level in Ghana.

The erudite Professor was the Lead Curriculum Co-ordinator for the four universities (University of Education, Winneba, University of Ghana, Legon, University for Development Studies and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology), that developed the New Teacher Education Curricula for the Colleges of Education in Ghana. 

He has also been doing consultancy work for the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, Transforming Teacher Education and Learning (T-TEL), Ghana and the Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA), Ghana.

Prof. George Kankam has published extensively in reputable refereed journals locally and internationally.   Some of his recent books are:  A Guide to Action Research for Colleges of Education and Universities; Multigrade Teaching for Primary School Teachers in Ghana; Action Research (Distance Education Material) written for Institute for Distance and e-Learning (IDeL); and Principles and Practice of Guidance and Counselling.

Prof. Kankam is married with children.
