DEANS, DIRECTORS AND HODs UNDERGO TWO-DAY ORIENTATION IN KUMASI

Deans, Directors and Heads of Department freshly appointed for the Colleges of Technology Education, Kumasi and Agricultural Education, Asante Mampong have undergone a two-day orientation to get them ready for effective delivery in their respective offices.

Speaking at the October 23-24, 2017 orientation in Kumasi, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni asked participants to intensify their pursuit for excellence in all they did since the country’s tertiary education industry was in rapidly changing times where competition was reaching overbearing levels. “We risk becoming irrelevant if we fail to pay particular attention to being excellent in all we do”, he said and explained thus, "excellence would require that our works are of greater worth, superior, pre-eminent, unusually good and surpassing ordinary standards”.

In order to achieve excellence, he advised that the participants to use initiative take responsibility for the chosen objectives, take ownership of problems, and learn new skills and share with colleagues for the growth of UEW. For his part, the Principal of CAGRIC, Prof. James K. Kagya-Agyemang advised participants to adhere to procedures and policies of the University if they were to be successful in their respective roles.

He asked them to be ready for the challenges that came with the new positions and touched particularly on conflicts which he said they would have to develop creative measures in solving before they escalate into difficult situations.

The Dean of the Faculty of Education and Communication Sciences (FECS) Prof. Frederick Sarfo urged participant to be diligent in their work since any failures could have dire consequences for the entire university. “You must know that these positions you are going to occupy are quite challenging and you can only succeed if you are hardworking, committed and ready to sacrifice”.

Topics that the new appointees were enlightened on included “Pursuing Excellence: Effective Management of Units”, by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni; and “Academic Leadership at the Faculties”, Principal, CAGRIC, Prof. James K. Kagya-Agyemang. Other topics were the “The Role of a Departmental Head at UEW”, Dean, FECS, Prof. Frederick Kwaku Sarfo; “Staff Professional Development”, Prof. Mary Dzansi-MacPalm; and “Staying Competitive Globally”, Director, Quality Assurance, Prof. Yaw Ameyaw. The rest were “Financial Management at the Units”, DFO, Mr. Frank Owusu Boateng and “Collaborative Leadership: The Role of the Administrator”, Mr. Samson Gamenya; “Importance of Internal Audit”, Ms Sena Dake; “Procurement Issues”, Mr. Yaw Adu Achiaw; and “OSIS: Prospects, Challenges and the Way Forward”, Mr. Eric Dogor.
