ACTING VICE-CHANCELLOR CHARGES UEW GRADUATES TO CREATE JOBS

A total of 2,989 people from the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) of the University of Education Winneba (UEW), have graduated with a charge to commit themselves to creating jobs rather than merely going to add to the numbers of disgruntled graduate unemployed in the country.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni gave the charge as an extempore intersperse of his speech to COLTEK’s colourful ceremony to mark the First Session of the 22nd Congregation of UEW, last Wednesday in Kumasi. He indicated that the UEW had deliberately crafted its courses to make it relevant, needful and market-driven to ensure that students gained ample practical training to spur them on to create jobs after graduation. Additionally, he said all level 300 students from all disciplines at COLTEK got the opportunity to undergo practical entrepreneurship training in areas including making of beads, ornaments, shoes, detergents, and liquid soap.

“Therefore, God forbid that you will leave this place only to go and join the Graduate Unemployed Association of Ghana and not put the requisite knowledge and skill you have gained from here to good use to benefit yourselves and Mother Ghana”, he stressed.

Meanwhile, he conceded that the beginnings of such ventures might always appear challenging; even so, the Acting Vice-Chancellor encouraged the graduates to remain steadfast, focused and persevering in order to prevail ultimately. “You can form teams and begin doing something for yourselves rather than waiting on almighty government for recruitment into the rarely available job vacancies”, he stressed.

For his part, the Chairman of the Governing Council of UEW, Prof. Nicholas Emmanuel Abakah encouraged the graduating students to join the Alumni Association of the UEW so that they could contribute to the building of the University and uphold its image in the global community.

The First Session of the 22nd Congregation of the UEW, this year, saw the graduation of a total of 8, 194 students from its four campuses at Winneba, Ajumako, (both in the Central Region) and Kumasi and Mampong in the Ashanti Region.
