STATEMENT ON UEW STUDENTS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AT ASUBOI
- In the early hours of Sunday, 13th March, 2022, a group of University of Education, Winneba (UEW) students from Sunyani and its environs were on their way to Winneba on board a Hyundai Universe Commercial bus.
- The bus was involved in an accident at Asuboi, a suburb of Suhum on the Accra-Kumasi highway. There were 35 registered UEW students on the bus. The bus had additional passengers other than UEW students.
- The University Management upon learning about the accident immediately dispatched a high-level Management team led by the Dean of Students Affairs to the site and later apprised Management of the unfortunate event.
- The team has confirmed that some of the students sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital for medical attention. Many of the injured have been treated and discharged. Further checks at the hospital indicate that three (3) of the students in critical condition were referred to Koforidua Regional Hospital for further treatment but are currently in stable condition.
- The University can confirm that 22 of the students who were treated and discharged have arrived back on campus and are being given further medical attention at the University Hospital. In addition, all the students are being taken through group and individual counseling as well as other support services to help them deal with the trauma. Two (2) additional students were picked up in Accra by their parents and have since been with them. Three (3) of the students are yet to be accounted for.
- Unfortunately, five of the passengers confirmed dead have been identified as students of UEW.
- The University is taking full responsibility for the medical bills of the affected students and has arranged for specialized medical services from the Trauma and Specialised Hospital, Winneba for the surviving students.
- We have also been in touch with the families of the affected students especially the deceased and the others who have been hospitalized and will surely extend to them all the necessary support needed.
- Management takes this opportunity to extend its condolences to the bereaved families and wish those on admission a speedy recovery. Management encourages the University community and stakeholders to remain calm even as we go through this moment of great pain and sadness.
- Management will continue to update the University community, parents, stakeholders, and the general public on new developments as they emerge.
Thank you.
