Aims

The programme aims at upgrading the knowledge and skills of Biology Educators. This will enhance their teaching methodologies as well as enhancing their biology classroom management practices and upgrading the content knowledge and skills of Biology graduates

 

Programme Objectives

The objectives of the Programme are as follows:

  • The programme is designed to equip students with the requisite theoretical knowledge and practical skills to enable them cope with the challenges of planning, monitoring and evaluating Biology Education programmes;
  • The programme also seeks to enable students demonstrate skills of being competent Biology teachers at the pre-tertiary and tertiary levels;
  • It further intends to help students exhibit an understanding of the psychology of teaching Biology;
  • It offers students the opportunity to improve upon the understanding of key concepts in curriculum policy formulation and curriculum development in Biology Education

Entry Requirement

Applicants possessing the following qualifications may be admitted to the Master of Education in Biology Education programme:

  1. A pass or better in BSc/BEd Biology Education from any recognised university.
  2. A pass or better in non-education first degree in Biology, Botany, Zoology or

Environmental Science from a recognised university plus any education qualification from a recognised university or college of education.

  1. Foreign applicants having qualifications stated in i and ii above can apply. However, their certificates will be assessed by GTEC to determine their appropriateness before they can be admitted. Students who obtained certificates from countries where English Language is not the medium of instruction will need to pass English proficiency examination.

Note: The credentials of all applicants will be assessed and those qualified admitted.

Duration

The programme will span one (1) year made up of two consecutive sandwich sessions of eight (8) weeks each. Students will take 5 courses in each session making ten (10) courses throughout the programme and a dissertation / project work of 6 credit hours. Each course shall be weighted 3 credit hours. Thus, a student requires a maximum of 36 credit hours for graduation in the Master of Education in Biology Education Programme.
