University Broadcast Services Department

University Broadcast Services Department is a semi-autonomous Department of the Division of Public Relations and Communication. Their day-to-day management is handled by a number of Station Managers with a Management Board, made up of selected members of the university community to oversee their activities. University Broadcast Services broadcast their activities on frequencies granted to the University by the National Communications Authority for institutional broadcasting stations. Currently, the University has one radio station, Radio Windy Bay broadcasting on a frequency of 98.3 at the Winneba campus. Applications have been put in, to secure frequencies for the operation of radio stations at the Ajumako campus. There are also plans to establish a television station for the University.

The functions of the Department include:

  • Inform, educate and entertain the university community and the general public within its catchment area.
  • Identify and tell the success stories of students, faculty, and the institution through news gathering, news writing, and editing stories of events and issues of the university
  • Serve as a channel/medium for the university’s strategic communication.
  • Serve as a potent means to reach out to the university community with important developmental and educational messages.
  • Deliver lectures to large classes for which the normal class size cannot contain.
  • Training of students interested in media and communications.
  • Broadcast programmes of the university including the live transmission of university functions.
  • Foster effective collaboration, syndications and affiliations with local and international media partners;
  • Assist the university to establish, operate and coordinate the activities of satellite radio stations on satellite campuses
  • Used as a laboratory for training students, especially students of the Department of Communication and Media Studies as well as Theatre Arts
