UEW-CHRAPS to Design Tailor-made Programmes for MLGDRD
The Centre for Conflict, Human Rights and Peace Studies (CHRAPS), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has hinted at plans to design suitable professional postgraduate programmes for staff at the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD).
The yet-to-be-designed programmes will have a flexible framework for the potential applicants. In addition to strengthening decentralised government and enhancing access to services at the subnational level, this will allow them to improve their personal and professional capabilities. The programmes will also advance chieftaincy, security, and forestry in the country.
A five-member delegation from CHRAPS, led by the Dean, Faculty of Social Science Education, UEW, Dr. Anselm Abotsi, called on the MLGDRD in Accra on Wednesday, 24th August, 2022, to reveal the initiative to the Ministry and explore how the two institutions could work together to make it feasible. They also wanted to ascertain the peculiar needs of staff to be factored in the design of the programmes.
"Our goal is to train human resources who will utilise their skills effectively. Therefore, the goal of coming here is to learn more about what goes on here. In this way, we can determine the type of training your team truly needs so that we can also customise our programmes to fit those needs and aid mother Ghana’s development," the Dean stated.
The Ag. Director of CHRAPS, Dr. George Hikah Benson, on his part, indicated that the programmes would not only be purely academic but also have a touch of professionalism.
"We will also run workshops on local government services if everything goes well. We'll visit the MMDCEs to set up workshops, equip them with tools for handling conflict, and discuss matters of national security. I have been the chairman of the regional coordinating council before and I know some of the lapses there, so we can work with them and give them the needed training," he said.
The Director, Division of Human Resources Management, MLGDRD, Mr. Kwabena Denkyira, speaking on behalf of the Minister, embraced the initiative and assured the delegation of reporting the good news to the Minister.
The CHRAPS delegation also included the Vice-Dean, Centre for International Programmes and Senior Lecturer, Dr. Harrison Golo; Lecturers, Rev. Fr. Dr. Linus Nangwele and Dr. Maxwell Acheampong.
