UEW Launches 2019-2023 Corporate Strategic Plan at COLTEK

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has launched its fourth 5-year (2019-2023) Corporate Strategic Plan (CSP) that would facilitate the successful execution of its core mandate as the foremost teacher training university in Ghana.

The 73-page document, launched at the Kumasi campus of the University on April 24, 2019 captures the University’s plan under seven crucial themes with respective clear-cut objectives and strategies.

The themes are Research and Innovation; Excellent Academic Standards in Teaching and Learning; Pragmatic and Purposeful Administrative System; Community, National, Regional and International Partnerships for Development; Enhanced Access, Equity and Inclusion; Proactive Quality Assurance System and Financial Sustainability and Accountability.

Launching it, the Deputy Minister of Education (General Education) and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency of the Ashanti Region, Honourable Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum challenged UEW to implement the content of the plan as a dynamic document that requires refinement and retooling along the way to its five-year lifespan.

Honourable Dr. Adutwum encouraged the University to include Tracer Studies as one of its key objectives so it could effectively follow-up on graduates from UEW. While commending UEW profusely for its commitment to its core mandate, the Deputy Minister reminded it that UEW must be achieving the height of transforming education in Ghana otherwise, it would be failing.

“Step up and take your rightful position in the education space so that not even the Ministry of Education could make a decision on education without first consulting you,” he said and added that the importance of education to the future development of Ghana could not be overly emphasized.

“Investing heavily in infrastructure like roads is important but the future development of this country is largely dependent on the kind of education we are offering to our young ones now,” he said further. UEW, he stressed, must be in the forefront to campaign for a change of the current approach to teaching etched deep in chewing, pouring, passing and forgetting.

He called for support from staff for the current Management of the University saying, “you have a great future with Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni leading as your Vice-Chancellor.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni traced the history of the development of Corporate Strategic Plans (CSPs) in UEW and announced happily that each of the previous three CSP’s, having unique focuses, had adequately addressed exigencies of their times and helped keep UEW on track to achieve its core mandate to remain competitive and relevant.

He commended the 12-member Strategic Plan Development Committee (SPDC) highly for the yeoman’s work they did to culminate in the workable document that would guide the development of UEW for the next five years.

The Chairman of the Governing Council of UEW, Prof. Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah described the launching of the fourth CSP as a historic moment in the life of UEW.

In his view, developing and committing to implementing a CSP was so important since it safeguards institutions against reactive tendencies and their attendant costs.

He therefore appealed to all relevant stakeholders to embrace and be strictly guided by the provisions of the CSP in all they did in and for the University.

The SPDC had as its Chairman, Prof. Samuel Hayford, Dean, Faculty of Education Studies, and as Members – Prof. S. Y. Annor, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture Education; Prof. Martin Amoah, Dean, Faculty of Vocational Education; Prof. Andy Ofori-Birikorang, Dean, Faculty of Foreign Languages Education and Communication and Prof. (Mrs.) Salome Essuman, Department of Educational Administration and Management.
