PROGRAMMES

The Department runs four programmes:

  • One (1) Undergraduate and
  • Three Postgraduate programmes (two regular and one sandwich).

The programmes are as specified below:

Title: B.Sc. (Mathematics Education)

Duration: 4 years

Type: Undergraduate

Mode: Regular

Description: The programme is to produce the best Mathematics Education Departments in Africa, renowned for the training of quality teachers in Mathematics Education   

Career options: Graduates could be employed in the:

Ministry of Education/Ghana Education Service;

Research Institutions;

Private Educational institutions;

Universities, and other allied institutions like;

Statistical Service;

Fire Service;

Immigration Service;

Police Service and allied security institution; and

Financial institutions among others

Scholarships: Ghana Government scholarships and VCs scholarships for undergraduate students and others can be accessed.

Title: M. Ed. (Mathematics)

Duration: 1 year

Type: Postgraduate

Mode: Sandwich

Description: The objective of the programme is to produce competent professional mathematics educators with theoretical, pedagogical and technological grounding for classroom professional practice, training, providing leadership on issues relating to mathematics education, and skills for conducting and interpreting research to inform their practice.

Career options: Graduates could be employed in the: 

Ministry of Education/Ghana Education Service;

Pre-university institutions;

Statistical Service;

Fire Service;

Immigration Service;

Police Service; and

Financial institutions, among others

Scholarships: N/A

Title: M.Phil. (Mathematics Education)

Duration: 2 years

Type: Postgraduate

Mode: Regular

Description: The programme is to provide students with a solid knowledge base and skills for teaching mathematics, conducting and interpreting research in mathematics education, effective instructional supervision; measurement and evaluation of teaching and learning; for the development, implementation and evaluation of the mathematics curriculum and for further studies in mathematics.

Financial institutions

Research institutions

Title: PhD (Mathematics Education)

Duration: 3 years

Type: Postgraduate

Mode: Regular

Description: The programme is planned to produce internationally reputable PhD mathematics education graduates who are imbued with research and pedagogic skills for teaching mathematics in universities and colleges of education, and taking positions as research fellow in tertiary institutions and other organisations.

Career options: Graduates of the PhD programme could be employed in the following sectors:

Ministry of Education

Universities and other tertiary/higher institutions

Ghana Revenue Authority

Financial institutions

Research institutions

Scholarships: Ghana Government scholarships for graduate students and others can be accessed.

FIELDS OF STUDY

The fields of study include: Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, Probability & statistics, Curriculum Studies in Mathematics Education, ICT in Mathematics Education, Differential and Integral Calculus among others.

RESOURCES/FACILITIES

The Department of Mathematics Education has a computer laboratory equipped with computers for ICT in mathematics education. There also are lecture Halls and offices for lecturers and the Department’s administrative staff. The department has a wealth of improvised TLMs for methodology courses.

ADMINISTRATION

The Head of Department is the Chief Executive who sees to the running of the day to day activities.  He/she is answerable directly to the Dean of the Faculty of Science Education and takes instructions from the Vice-Chancellor.
