The Determinants of the Digitalisation of the Import Clearance Process: Evidence from the Tema Port

This study examined factors that influence the digitalisation of the import clearance process at the Tema Port. The study specifically aimed to assess the variables that influence the acceptance of digitalisation in cargo clearance at the Tema Port. A conceptual framework consisting of constructs drawn from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was developed and used for the study. The study adopted the quantitative survey research design. Using both purposive and convenience sampling techniques 188 respondents were sampled. Data collection involved the use of structured questionnaires. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) technique was used to establish the relationship among the variables. The study discovered that all the hypotheses formulated were statistically significant. The study recommends that users of the digital system be given adequate training, dedicated communication channels be developed and adequate provision and upgrading of ICT infrastructure by stakeholders to enable employees to make better use of the digital platform for import clearance. This study is possibly one of the few that looks at the digitisation process at the port from a multi-stakeholder perspective in an emerging economy (Ghana).
