Department of Agricultural Science Interacts with Industry Players
The Department of Agricultural Science Education, University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has held a stakeholder engagement with directors of agriculture from districts in the Central Region to solicit inputs to deliver tailor-made programmes.
The meeting discussed some challenging issues in agriculture and ways to fashion customised programmes to solve problems both in animal and crop production. There was also a discourse on the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UEW and the districts in the areas of research and student internship.
The Dean, Faculty of Science Education, UEW, and Chairman for the meeting, Prof. Victor Antwi, accentuated in his remarks, the importance of agriculture in the lives of everybody.
"In fact, it is one of the programmes we need to promote because it is a way of providing us with the food to make us healthier, especially in our schools. It implies helping farmers produce healthier foods, which will be of benefit to a wide range of people," he asserted.
Prof. Antwi disclosed that there had been new kinds of diseases due to the inappropriate approach adopted by some farmers in spraying crops. This, he said, had caused food contamination. "It is very important that we have these types of meetings so that at the end, we can learn from each other and keep the nation going."
The Ag. Head, Department of Agricultural Science Education, Dr. Benjamin Ghansah, revealed that his outfit was considering having certificate, diploma, and some more bachelor’s, master’s and PhD programmes, which must be developed in partnership with relevant stakeholders.
"We don’t want to develop programmes that are alien to what's being done on the field. We want to incorporate some of the challenges and issues you encountered while working with extension officers and farmers into the programmes we'll be mounting. We'll be having a series of engagements with you to strengthen and enrich the programme we have here. We're hopeful that it'll be beneficial to not just our students but to the outside world," he averred.
Faculty members also present at the meeting were Dr. Isaac Kwasi Asante, Dr. Kwabena Kyere, Dr. Sonny Gad Attipoe, Mr. Michael Odenkey Quaye, Ms. Lydia Asare and Ms. Hannah Ansah.
