UEW Faculty of Foreign Languages Education Organises Mentorship Training for Staff

The Faculty of Foreign Languages Education (FFLE), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has organised a one-day mentorship workshop for its academic and administrative staff at the School of Creative Arts Conference Room, Central Campus, Winneba.  

The workshop, which took place on Friday, 11th March, 2022, was under the theme “Faculty Mentorship: A Prerequisite for Faculty Development towards the Achievement of UEW’s Corporate Staff Development Objectives”.

The platform was aimed at providing staff of the Faculty with insight into its Mentorship Programme, empowering them to investigate and deploy creative contributions to make the programme more effective and appealing to the target audience.

The Dean of FFLE, Dr. Charlotte Fofo Lomotey, in her welcome address, underscored the need to enhance staff capacity in research, innovation and knowledge transfer as contained in Theme One, Objective Two of the University’s Corporate Strategic Plan. “To enrich the Faculty’s Mentorship programme, we have organised this workshop to deepen our knowledge and enhance the practice of mentorship in the Faculty.”

She expressed hope that the training would improve Faculty Members' mentoring skills and inform mentors and mentees about their rights, privileges, and obligations.

The Deputy Registrar, Institute for Educational Research and Innovation Studies (IERIS), Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah, delivered an elaborative lecture on the topics “Mentoring in the Academia, Duties of a Mentor and Responsibilities of a Mentee”.  

She encouraged participants to network with others when attending conferences, seminars, workshops, or other significant events, as well as at their workplaces. She also urged participants to have faith in themselves and their abilities.

The forum was later opened for participants’ contributions and questions. This was followed by practical hands-on sessions on the roles of mentors and mentees in groups. 

Also in attendance were the Vice-Dean, FFLE, Dr. Mrs. Rebecca Akpanglo-Nartey; Head, Department of Applied Linguistics, Dr. Sefa Owusu; Head, Department of French Education, Dr. Emmanuel K. Afari; Head, Department of English Education, Ms. Michelle Debrah; and other Professors of the Faculty.
