UEW Students Excel at Rehabilitation Seminar

The Department of Special Education (SPED) at the University of Education, Winneba hosted a seminar on Friday, 22nd August 2025, at the North Campus Mini-Conference Room, featuring students from the Community-Based Rehabilitation and Disability Studies (CBRS) programme.

The event showcased the students' experiences and insights gained from a field trip to five rehabilitation centres: Mephibosheth Training Centre, Padre Pio Rehabilitation Centre, Salvation Army Rehabilitation Centre (Agona Duakwa), Orthopedic Training Centre (OTC) and Accra Rehabilitation Centre.

During the seminar, students presented their findings and reflections from the visit, highlighting the unique approaches and strengths of each centre. The Mephibosheth Training Centre impressed the students with its holistic approach to education, combining academic, vocational, and agricultural training to empower children with disabilities. The centre's emphasis on inclusivity, compassion and discipline resonated deeply with the students. Similarly, the Padre Pio Rehabilitation Centre's focus on community-based rehabilitation and poverty reduction left a lasting impact.

The students also appreciated the Salvation Army Rehabilitation Centre's efforts in providing sheltered workshops and vocational training while the Orthopedic Training Centre's specialised programmes for physical rehabilitation demonstrated the importance of tailored interventions. The Accra Rehabilitation Centre with its comprehensive approach to rehabilitation and social inclusion further underscored the value of a multifaceted approach to supporting individuals with disabilities.

Through their presentations, the students demonstrated a deep understanding of the complexities of disability support and rehabilitation, emphasising the need for collaborative efforts to promote inclusivity and empowerment.

The lecturers, who served as dignitaries and evaluators, praised the students for their thoughtful reflections and insights, emphasising the significance of practical experience in shaping their understanding of disability studies.

The seminar concluded with a renewed appreciation for the importance of community-based initiatives and interdisciplinary collaboration in promoting the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.

The CBRS students gained valuable insights into the various approaches and strategies employed to support individuals with disabilities, ultimately enriching their academic and professional development by engaging with diverse rehabilitation centres.

The event showcased the University of Education, Winneba's commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity, empathy and social responsibility among its students.
