Description

Integrated Home Economics Education is the only Home Economics programme that is dedicated to the training of professional teachers in all three areas of Home Economics (Clothing & Textiles, Management in Living and Food & Nutrition) under one umbrella. Therefore, graduates of this programme will be versatile assets at the various levels of education where their services would be needed. Notwithstanding education, graduates of this programme have the added advantage of establishing small and medium scale businesses in all the three aspects of Home Economics to augment their income. This will further help to reduce unemployment problems in the country as graduates will stand the chance of employing others.

 Concepts and ideas from a dynamic subject like Home Economics Education is not limited to the formal school system, but also to community extension services by providing relevant and valuable information and skills for the general populace (especially communities in the University’s catchment area) in basic Home Economics principles and practices in order to improve upon the quality of life. The program equips students with requisite knowledge and skills in Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, Family Resource Management as well as Entrepreneurship. These equip the students with practical occupational relevant skills to reduce graduate unemployment, reduce poverty and ensure sustainable socio-economic growth and national development. 

 

Notable courses offered include Entrepreneurship and Mini Businesses Management Community Nutrition and Health, Recipe Development and Preservation, Professional Techniques in Clothing Production, Pattern Making and Processes in Garment construction, Population Education, Financial Management and Practicum in Family Living, The programme is designed to equip students with knowledge and skills that would enable them to effectively teach Home Economics subjects such as Catering and Sewing under Career Technology at the Junior High Schools; the Home Economics components in Vocational/Technical Institutions and Senior High Schools as well as function creditably in other areas of employment other than teaching.

Prospects/Career Options

The following are some of the areas in which graduates of the programme may find employment in:

  1. Education: graduates will mainly gain employment in the Education sector as teachers and administrators. However, due to the integrative nature of the programme, graduates may be employed in the following sectors of the economy as well.
  2. Catering and Hospitality industries as chefs, hotel and restaurant managers, public house managers, accommodation managers, menu design managers, event planners/managers among others due to the food and nutrition courses integrated in the programme.
  3. Garment and Fashion industries as fashion designers, personal stylists, wardrobe planners, garment technologists, tailors/seamstresses among others due to the clothing and textiles and entrepreneurial courses which are partly involved in the programme.
  4. Trade and Tourism industries as travel managers, travel counsellors, tour managers, reservations sales agents, tour guides among others due to the resource management, Family Life Education and entrepreneurial courses embedded in the programme.
  5. Interior Decoration/Event planning industries as event planners, interior decorators, event organizers due to the clothing and textiles and entrepreneurial courses put together in the programme.
  6. Governmental and Non-Governmental institutions as social workers, Child Right Advocates, Human Right Advocates, Community Health Advocates among others due to food and nutrition, health and sanitation, resource management, family studies and other relevant courses incorporated in the programme.

Target Group

Holders of WASSCE or SSCE certificates from the West African Examinations Council who offered Home Economics (Clothing and Textiles & Food and Nutrition options)  are the main target for the programme. In addition, HND graduates in Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management, Fashion and Textiles from the Technical Universities in Ghana with a minimum of Second-Class Lower division can be admitted to Level 200 and complete the programme in three years.

Entry Requirement

Minimum qualification for admission into the programme: Admission into the programme shall be based on the general minimum requirements demanded by the University of Education, Winneba as well as special departmental requirements.

 

I. Category A: WASSCE Applicants

Core subjects: Applicants must have a minimum of grade C6 in English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science.

Elective subjects: Applicants must have a minimum of grade C6 in Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, Management in Living and Chemistry or Biology or Economics or French or General Knowledge in Art (GKA). The overall aggregate for WASSCE applicants must not be more than 36.

 

II. Category B: SSCE Applicants

Core subjects: Applicants must have a minimum of grade D in English Language, Mathematics and Core or Integrated Science.

Elective subjects: Applicants must have a minimum of grade D in Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, Management in Living and Chemistry or Biology or Economics or French or General Knowledge in Art (GKA). The overall aggregate for SSCE applicants must not be more than 24.

 

III. Category C: Advanced Level Applicants

Applicants must have six ‘O’ Level passes (Grade 1 to 6) including English and Mathematics in addition to three ‘A’ Level passes including Biology or Chemistry or Agricultural Science (Grade A to E).

 

IV. Category D: Mature Applicants

Applicants must be at least 25 years old by the academic year of enrolment. Applicants must have a valid WASSCE/SSSCE or Ordinary Level Certificate. The applicant must also pass the Entrance Examinations for the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) General Aptitude Test (GAT) and the Subject Area Test (SAT) for the Department.

 

V. Category E: Applicants with HND certificates

Applicants must have HND certificates in Catering and Hospitality related areas and Fashion and Textiles from the Technical Universities in Ghana with a minimum of Second-Class Lower division can be admitted to Level 200 and complete the programme in three years.

 

VI: Category F: General Business Certificate Examination Holders (GBCE)

Applicants must have passes (A-D) in six subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language and Core Mathematics plus three relevant elective subjects. Such applicants would be eligible for admission to level 100.

 

VII: Category G: Advanced Business Certificate Examination Holders (ABCE)

Applicants must have credit passes in five subjects including English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies at the GBCE examination plus three optional subjects relevant to the programme of study.  Such applicants will be placed at level 200.

  

VIII. Category H: Applicants with foreign certificates

Applicants with equivalent certificates from accredited foreign institutions will be considered for admission.
