Leader in Teacher Education

The Department of Early Childhood Education was established during 2004/2005 academic year in response to a Government of Ghana White Paper on the Anamuah-Mensah Education Review Committee Report (2002), which made Pre-School/Kindergarten education part of the formal education system in the country. This development arose the need to train professionals to teach at the Pre-school/Kindergarten level. The University, which is charged with the responsibility of producing professional educators for pre-university education in Ghana, established the Department to train professionals for the early childhood level.

The Department shall become a renowned centre that maintains a qualified faculty that models best professional practices in scholarship, teaching and service and devoted to the   training of high quality early childhood professionals.

The Department will develop committed, knowledgeable, skilled, competent, confident, innovative, reflective, and caring early childhood professionals who will provide effective, child-centred and developmentally appropriate learning environments for young children.

The ECCD programme is designed to provide a programme of study focusing on the developmentally appropriate care and education of children from birth through age eight within various early childhood settings. It emphasizes the whole child and exposes students to the scientific knowledge base regarding: (1) development of children, (2) learning theory, and (3) appropriate educational practices as well as the opportunity to develop competence in working with parents of young children. Other issues include: assessments and techniques, aspects of child development, principles of guidance, professionalism and advocacy.
