The University of Education, Winneba, the sole university dedicated to teacher education in Ghana, was founded as the University College of Education, Winneba, an amalgamation of Seven (7) diploma awarding colleges located in different towns under one umbrella institution in 1992.
The University is charged with the responsibility of producing professional educators to spearhead a new national vision of education aimed at redirecting Ghana’s efforts along the path of rapid economic and social development. The University of Education, Winneba, is expected to play a leading role in the country’s drive to produce scholars whose knowledge would be fully responsive to the realities and exigencies of contemporary Ghana and the West African sub-region.

The University of Education, Winneba, determined to guarantee the fulfillment of its core mandate has developed a new Corporate Strategic Plan (2019-2023) as a mechanism to counter the emerging contemporary challenges confronting public universities in Ghana and UEW in particular.
The Plan highlights collaborative research, more stakeholder engagement, and enhanced efforts to make significant impact in communities in which the University operates. It builds on the successes achieved under the previous Corporate Strategic Plans.
Over two decades of its existence, the University has continually improved and expanded its programmes and facilities to make it a preferred destination of choice for higher education.
UEW continues to make improvements in areas of teaching, learning, research and the use of Information and Communication Technologies in educational delivery. Efforts are made to constantly review programmes to make them responsive to the exigencies of modern times. The University promotes a culture of innovation, originality and academic independence. Highly motivated staff combine teaching and lecturing methods, and deploy modern ICT facilities for instructional delivery thus reducing learning to fun. Our programmes are offered in various modes – Fulltime, Sandwich and Distance – to suit the choice of our students.
The University operates a multi-campus system of administration with two campuses, namely:
- Winneba Campus
- Ajumako Campus
The Winneba campus, which is the seat of the Vice-Chancellor has three different sites – North, Central and South campuses and over 40 Distance Education Study Centres working to bring quality education closer to the doorsteps of Ghanaians.
Until 2013, UEW had three key Research Centres – Centre for School and Community Science and Technology Studies (SACOST); National Centre for Research into Basic Education (NCRIBE); and Centre for Educational Policy Studies (CEPS) – which conducted research into the practice of basic education, education management and leadership, contributing to educational policies and development at the institutional and national levels.
To strengthen further our research activities for the promotion of educational policies and development, the three Research Centres have since 2013 been merged into a vibrant research Institute known as the Institute for Educational Research and Innovation Studies (IERIS).
There are other thriving Research Centres such as Centre for Conflict, Human Rights and Peace Studies and Centre for Competence-Based Training and Research which research activities are pushing the frontiers of academia and society.
