Prof. Esther Danso-Wiredu Assumes the Role of Pro-Vice-Chancellor at UEW

The Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has officially appointed Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu as the new Pro-Vice-Chancellor, making her the first female to assume the role in a substantive capacity in the institution's history.

In a brief ceremony, she was officially inducted into office for a two-year term, surrounded by top management, academic heads and staff.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, traced the careful, consultative and democratic process that led to her selection. “We must choose the right people to lead the institution,” he said, reflecting on the journey that began in March and culminated in the Governing Council’s appointment of Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu on Wednesday 4th June, 2025.

Prof. Mitchual highlighted the importance of integrity and institutional procedures, declaring that decisions at UEW must always serve the greater good of the university. “Every decision I take, I ask: can it make the university better?” he stressed. Offering heartfelt congratulations, he assured the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of his unwavering support—so long as her actions align with UEW’s mission and values.

Prof. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, Principal of the College for Distance and e-Learning (CODeL) at UEW, advised the new Pro-Vice-Chancellor to be guided by university statutes and to treat all members of the community equitably.

Prof. Rebecca Akpanglo-Nartey, Principal of the College of Languages Education at the Ajumako Campus of UEW, expressed her confidence in Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu’s strength and tenacity, while Mr. Charles Coffie, the university’s Internal Auditor, commended her as a trailblazer. “Her name goes into the university records,” he noted, pledging his office’s support to her success.

Ms. Agatha Gifty Larson, the University Librarian, lauded the appointment as a testament to Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu’s commitment to academic excellence. “Asomdwee nka wo,” she said in a heartfelt local expression of peace and goodwill.

Arch. Grace Akweley Oppong Peprah, Director of Works and Physical Development, offered a profound message of biblical encouragement to the new Pro-Vice Chancellor. She advised the new appointee to “fix your eyes on the one who gave you the promotion,” referencing Hebrews 12:2.

Mrs. Deborah Afful, Deputy Registrar at the Division of Academic Affairs, and Mr. Charles Bedzra, University Accountant, each echoed the call for unity, coordination and humility in service, emphasising servant leadership and faith-based guidance

In her acceptance speech, a visibly moved Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the trust reposed in her. “He had every right to choose anyone but he chose the three of us. I pledge to serve in humility and to work with everyone to move this university forward,” she said.

She pledged her support for the Vice-Chancellor’s vision and emphasised her ambition to elevate UEW’s visibility not only within Ghana but across the globe. “We are all here to serve UEW. That is the most important thing,” she declared.

Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu’s ascension marks not only a milestone in gender representation at UEW but also sets a tone for collaborative, ethical and forward-thinking leadership.
