UEW Farm Trains Staff on Livestock and Poultry Disease Prevention
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Farm trained its staff and farm workers in livestock and poultry disease prevention, emphasising biosecurity, hygiene and effective animal management to minimise disease outbreaks and protect farm investments.
The workshop, held at the University Farm, featured Mr. Godwin Agbenyegah, Regional Animal Production Officer for the Volta Region, as the resource person.
Mr. Agbenyegah highlighted the financial risks of livestock production. He warned that disease outbreaks could cause significant losses by killing large numbers of animals in a short period.
He urged participants to adopt preventive measures including keeping farms away from areas frequented by humans and other animals, quarantining newly acquired animals for at least two weeks, isolating sick animals from healthy stock and maintaining clean farm environments.
“I am not only here to teach but to also interact with you because I believe the more you work, the more you become experienced. So, we will share ideas,” he said, emphasising the value of practical experience and knowledge exchange in improving animal production.
The training also addressed poultry management with Mr. Agbenyegah urging farmers to align their husbandry practices with their production objectives, particularly healthy growth and consistent egg production.
“If you decide to rear livestock, you must make sure you achieve the main purpose of your decision,” he advised.
The workshop is part of efforts to strengthen practical knowledge among UEW Farm personnel, improve livestock and poultry management, and promote safer and more sustainable farming practices.
